Hi,

I hate having to do this, but I must part ways with my cat. Nelly has been a fantastic companion, but my newborn daughter has had a sneeze and occasional puffy eyes for the past few months and I have to consider the fact that Nelly could be the cause.

About him: He is great! He sleeps a lot, yet he is always ready to play. He is affectionate and loves to sit on your lap or sit close to you, yet he is not needy. He knows the meaning of "no", "get down" and "piss off", and obeys without fuss.

I often call him a "catdog" because he is very much like a dog in his personality. He comes to the door when I get home from work (he doesn't greet the wife this way though), and he likes to lick and be petted.

He is great with kids. He has been chased by a toddler, and never once acted with aggression. He has been fantastic around my daughter, doing nothing more than giving an occasional sniff, and I trust him 100% to be left in a room alone with her for extended periods.

He is wary of strangers, and often hides from them. He is ok to be left alone for short periods of time. I left him in my old 1-room for 5 days and he was great, as long as my friend fed him once a day. He was destructive when left alone for 2 weeks, but that was in a new apartment. We moved in and then went to England for 2 weeks with most things still in boxes. He never spoke to me for a few days after that!

He quickly learns where he can an cannot go. He keeps out of our bedroom, despite obviously wanting to take a look around. He also keeps off 1 sofa, knowing that he can always sit on the second. In our office, he sits on my wifes chair, as I taught him not to sit on mine. He actually spends most of his time there so the chair has been scratched a little and is always hairy. My chair is always free of fur!

In both apartments I have had, he has picked spots to scratch at. Once he learns that he is not allowed to scratch something, he tends not to go back there, unless the furniture is 'his'. In my old place, nothing was his so he kept his claws away from the furniture. In the new place, we got him a cheap sofa and so that has been scratched. My wifes office chair also bears a few scars! To help with training, we have some anti-scratching scent that he tends to avoid (humans can't smell it). To be honest, he would love a basket, but I have never bothered to get him one. He always likes to sleep in the same spot, so could be easily trained to sleep in one.

His talent? He is toilet trained! He does not use cat litter, and instead perches over the pan like any good cat should! I took him from another teacher and in my one-room, he instantly knew where to go. When I got married and we moved into the new apartment, he again knew what to do. You will never have to buy expensive cat litter. Just flush for him! (He can flush our current toilet himself, but I taught him not to as he was flushing constantly for fun).

I will provide all the goodies I have for him - a stiff wire brush that he loves, feeding bowls, a carrier, a selection of toys, and scratching post that he tends to ignore (unless you sprinkle catnip on it).

If you want to visit him in his present home, I am in Dongducheon, near the end of the number 1 line. I am happy to deliver him anywhere, but he hates to travel (and cries a lot) so would prefer somebody as close as possible. I am happy to wait a while for the right person, and will do whatever I can for any long-timers who want to take him, as I would prefer to spare him the distress of moving again. If you are interested in a great companion (who can use the toilet), send me a message here and we can arrange to meet up. If you want to visit him, it will need to be on a Saturday or Sunday due to my working commitments. If you have any questions, send me a message here.

Mike

You should post this on www.animalrescuekorea.org

He sounds amazing like that cat from Meet the Parents...or Meet the Fokkers.

Does he cry a lot at other times, or just when traveling? (I want to get a cat but have no idea where to put a litter box. No good corners for it.)

He cries when travelling, and for the first night or 2 in a new place. The only other times he cries is when locked out of somewhere (on my balcony) or when his food bowl has been empty too long and he wants you to fill it up.

How old is he?
Do you think he'd be fine with a new owner?
Is he neutered?

Can I be honest here? It sounds like your wife may be the one getting rid of the cat. Laughing

How did you do this? Very cool. Was it difficult? My kitty is four months old. Do you think it's possible?

You can find online guides on how to train your kitty. Something like: gradually move the box closer until it's on top of the toilet, then remove the box. Never tried it.

It seems like I'll be adopting his cat. I hope the cat's not pregnant this time like the last time I adopted one from Dave's.

I tried the toilet training with my cat but completely failed. Having said that, she's not really a smart kitty and I began the training when she was over 1 year old. I'm sure you'd have better luck with younger, smarter cats.

Well, maybe you'll be getting him. The owner bailed out on me at the last minute cuz he didn't want to meet at a McDonald's parking lot. Shocked

I was looking forward to getting my cat a friend, but oh well...
