Hey, that's where I got mine!
There is another place just around the corner from that which sells 'em, too. That shop is buried in the side catacombs. Good little place. The salesman was younger, and spoke some English. He let me try it out (although just with an audio board in the middle of the store).
I see they dropped the price on the Studio Projects C1, which some say is a bit better, but I think the B1 sounds great.
By the way, I got an ART Tube MP USB preamp that sounds pretty good, so I get USB input with mine and avoid the sound card entirely. That cost $150 after shipping from Amazon (forced to buy expensive shipping from the US now). |

check out the quality of your soundcard's mic preamp(s) before shelling out a bunch of money for a decent condenser mic. buying a $2000 neumann mic and running it through a $10 soundblaster preamp is just stupid. a USB mic might sound ok, but you won't be able to use it anywhere else.
you should buy a decent mic and a decent preamp. mics are audio gear, not computer gear! |
you wouldn't be able to use a soundcard preamp for a condenser mic anyways. i could be wrong, but last i saw soundcards don't come with phantom power. if your pre went thru the soundcard and not usb/firewire from a recording interface that's a diff story tho.
the studio projects b1 was the first mic i ever owned. never had any complaints about it. it sounded pretty damn good for the $100 i spent on it a few years back.
i left my audio technica 2020 back home (only a $300 mic), and i'm considering getting it shipped out here and buying a firewire interface. but then i'd have to buy a mic stand, cables, and studio monitors to get a decent finished product. might just start paying to record at studios. |

why don't those USB mics have XLR outs as well? it seems like a pretty simple feature that would greatly improve the versatility of these mics, as well as provide a way to upgrade its components, i.e. preamp, A/D converter, 16 -> 24 bits, etc. i think the 'all-in-one' idea looks like a great idea until you realize how many half-assed components they're cramming into a $100 product. you'll get what you pay for!
the B1 sounds like a decent mic, but definitely should not be compared to a $2000 neumann! i personally love the AKG C1000, but that'll cost you about $300.
if you're going to yongsan, make sure you buy a mic from a music dealer, not a computer store! |

I finally opted for the Studio Projects B1 and it's in the mail as I write this post. I think I got a pretty good deal by Korean standards. The sound tests were impressive and the mic performed well at most frequencies.
I would just like to thank everyone who contributed to the post, especially bassexpander, for their advice and reccommendations. This is what forums are all about - people advising and helping each other out when they can.
Now all I need to do is try and do the mike some justice by not singing horribly out of key.
take it easy folks

The opposite is true-- a USB mic has its own D/A converter built-in, so it's not dependent on the sound card at all. Regular mics are. |
