I just printed out my letter of resignation, my official two weeks notice. Got an offer from another company for a lot more money, more vacation, a 15 minute commute, a chance to be a big fish in a small pond, a chance to learn new skills, etc. A no brainer move. Normally I'd have no problem resigning but then I've only been at this job for 6 months and it's really all around a pretty decent job with decent people. Of course that describes nearly every place I've worked: a decent job with decent people. What makes me hesitant to place my letter on my boss's desk is the short duration I've been at this company. Usually I'm at a company for 2-5 years.

Ugg. I'm debating waiting until Monday not to ruin anyone's weekend.

Any advice?

I think you should just give up altogether and get your arse back to teaching ESL in Korea. That's what I think.

A lot of companies will tell you to scram immediately and pay you the two weeks on the spot. Give 'em 4 weeks notice!

Good luck.

Ha. I've always felt a month's notice is a bad idea. One, when a company doesn't need you, they won't give you lots of lead time, typically. I'm not sure they deserve the same. Two, your boss who you liked to think of as a friend and mentor can suddenly change radically in attitude when you're about to leave the tribe. Three, it's a bit of arrogance. Companies are generally like self sealing tires. They may miss you for a bit but people kind of automatically fill in the hole you left. When I begin to think I'm indispensable at a company I remember the maxim "the graves are full of people who could not be replaced."

There's a meeting Monday morning to talk about the online help system I developed. I figured I'll tell my boss first thing Monday morning and then we can use the meeting to map out what needs to be done before I leave.

I did somewhat the same thing.

I got an internal promotion to Project Manager, and after 6 months I gave them my resignation. They were a bit pissed.

But if great opportunities come along, being the nice guy makes you the sucker in the story.

Absolutely. I would have felt better but the marketing woman did a "midnight run" a few weeks ago. One day she just didn't show up at work. She claims her father died but she oddly left her magnetic door keys before she left.

Anyway, I felt bad because I didn't want my boss to suddenly think there was a huge exodus for the door.

I'm working hard to get a friend in the door. He's been working as a business analyst at Chrysler and he's become aware lately he's not got a lot of job security and maybe he should look at a change in career. He's in Windsor but has family in this area and is keen to move up here.

I've never understood this attitude. As long as you can justify moving on to something better, why wouldn't you do it? Why worry about what other people think of your career track?

Yeah. They seemed pretty diplomatic about it. I have, however, seen companies not treat some people particularly well during their last two weeks. You never know. But at the end of the day, you have to pursue your own self interest. Companies do. The owner will. You need to as well.

I thought I was being clever in turning in my notice while the president was away on business. He's back. And matching the other job plus extreeeee. And I have a day to play with the numbers. Grr.

Really? I'm a Business Analyst, I'll replace you!

We're loosing 35-40k white collar jobs if GM and Chrysler merge. Quite a few but less than if one of them sinks.

I'm actually leaving automotive and going to Korea to teach ESL. Rather be employed in a foreign country than unemployed at home.
