Despite international outrage at the persistence of piracy in the waters off Somalia, there appears to be no consensus yet on how to deal with the problem.

The varying approaches were underscored this week when a South Korea shipping company decided to pay the ransom that one band of pirates had demanded in exchange for freeing a ship on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a stalemate remains in the most prominent hijacking, in which Somali pirates took over a Ukranian ship carrying Russian-built tanks and other weapons.

U.S. and Russian warships have those pirates cornered, but the forces have yet to take action. The pirates had warned they would blow up the ship unless a ransom is paid, but have yet to follow through on the threat.

The case of a hijacked Panama-flagged cargo ship, on the other hand, ended Tuesday in a violent resolution when soldiers from a semiautonomous region of Somalia moved in.

"When we reached where the pirates had anchored their ship they started firing at us and hit our ship," Operation Commander Abdirahshid Abdirahin Ismail said, according to an Associated Press translation.

One soldier died and another was wounded, but the forces succeeded in taking the ship when the 10 pirates ran out of ammunition and surrendered.

Pirates have seized more than two dozen ships this year off the Horn of Africa, but the Ukrainian ship has drawn intense interest because of its military cargo.

International pressure on the pirates is growing. NATO is sending seven ships to the treacherous waters in which the ship is being held.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Glad to hear they were released.

My Korean friend works for the shipping company that sent the ship. He told me about the kidnapping about a month ago and said they had paid the media not to report it. It's been quite a stressful month for him and his colleagues.

Not long before South Korea joins the Axis of Evil, looking at how much money they're giving to all these terrorists and pirates. I wonder if they'll start sending hostages to Afghanistan again soon.

The irony, of course, being that by saving these specific people, they're painting a massive target on ALL South Koreans travelling abroad. At this point, the RoK has a reputation for opening their wallets when their people get kidnapped.

I had this conversation with a coteacher... "Why do they kidnap people?" "Because you pay them to do it." "What do you mean??"

Well, the first guy gets a notion to board a ship and take hostages. He wants 100m won to get them back. So what do you do? You pay him his 100m won. Pretty soon word spreads that ransom demands are actually getting *paid*... well... Then they gotta take a number and get in line.

This is what happens when you negotiate with terrorists.

The title of this thread is absolutely ridiculous.

Are people really unable to distinguish between "South Korea" and "a South Korean shipping company"?

It makes no sense to depict "Korea" as a monolithic entity, where the actions of an individual entity are attributed to the nation as a whole.

It reminds me of the frustrated hogwan jockeys who impress us all with sage decrees like "get your act together, Korea!" when complaining about the standard of service in their local shoe repair shop.

Pirates order you to stand to and prepare to be boarded. They raid your ship and bugger off. Terrorists take hostages. s/ship/aircraft, add hostages and demands, and you've got yourself an act of terrorism.

What rubbish

Terrorism requires some kind of political motive...Are you suggesting that a plain bank robbery is an act of terrorism? Or even a mugging?

These pirates are stealing because they love cash and wanna buy new parrots or something...They arent trying to make a politcal statement or affect social change.

Since when did terrorism require an ideological motive?
