My contract expires on 13 December 2008. I don't know if it was from an honest lack of knowledge or that she simply didn't care, but I was told by my my supervising Korean teacher that I could not get my diploma back from them(the school) when I leave.

I'm looking for another job now....for Winter Camp as well as Spring 09.....son naturally I'd like to have my diploma back for the next employer. It doesn't seem reasonable that the school would need, or want, to keep it. Do they have the legal ability to keep it.......or is it something that they've done with other teachers?

Thanks,
Art

ABSOLUTLY NOT.
Your school should have returned your diploma soon after you arrived and no later than when you recieved your ARC.

If they need a copy of your diploma for records purposes, make a photocopy and give it to them.

Don't wait till December 13th to get your diploma, TAKE IT BACK TOMORROW.

PS. If you co-teacher has your balls, you should get those back asap too Smile

I think it is just lack of knowledge on your supervisor's part.
I got my diploma back from my GEPIK high school like two weeks after I got there.

If she insists you could contact the GEPIK coordinator. I am sure someone here has their details.

I trust you were referring to getting your balls back before you leave, and not your diploma. The balls they can play with, but the diploma needs to be immediate. If you leave it to the last moment, you put them in a power position, because they know you are getting desparate for it. Koreans LUUUUVVVVV to screw with the monkey. Do'nt know why. Maybe it's as simple as the small *beep* thing. Ask for it today. If it's not in your hands tomorrow, call labor. If you think I'm kidding, go ahead and see. You can't get a new job without it, and your next employer will likely want to get their hands on it before you start.

I wouldn't have given my diploma to them in the first place. If they want to see my diploma, I will show it to them, but it doesn't leave my possession.

Oh, and it's also illegal...why the heck would they keep something that ain't theirs

You CAN call the police over this. It's your property.

Do it, if you've got the cajones.

Now that you have your answer re: diploma, may I please hijack your thread?

Who has my original CRC and can I get it back right now?

My wrangler said immigration keeps it. True?

Art, try the nice way first, but only for a week at most. Make the calls up the chain of command. If you still don't have your diploma, say something along these lines...

"Oh, I'm so sorry to tell you that I contacted my embassy about the diploma and they told me that I must call the police! Can you imagine that? I'm so hoping that I won't have to call the police, but I guess I have to do what my embassy tells me...so if it's not back in my hands by ___________, that's what I'll have to do."

A diploma from a western school has value in Korea, ins the same way that a stolen passport has value. It has lot more value to the person keeping it than the cost of a replacement to you, so if you don't get it back by ___________, CALL THE POLICE and report it stolen.

NEVER give out your real diploma in the first place. Before you go, go to the nearest Korean consulate and get copies of it notarized in Korean, officially. That covers all the legal ground. If the boss wants the real diploma, you know it's a scam.

You can call the police, but you know, we are in Korea. You can always get a new diploma, probably quite easily, from your university for less than 50 bucks like you can with transcripts.

Good luck!

Look, the provinical/metropolitan Office of Education has already returned the diploma to the school. Actually, they send the thing back to the NET "care of" the school. The school is supposed to deliver it, just like any other mail addressed to someone, to that person. The OP should tell the co-teacher, "Return my diploma to me right now or I call the supervisor at the regional Office of Education. You have 15 minutes."

And maybe, just maybe, the school will clue into the fact that illegally holding onto someone else's property for eleven months is not a good idea.

I got a notarized copy of my degree, scanned it into my computer and left a copy in my draft e-mail account. If they want it, I can print out a colour copy wherever I am. Done, simple and never had a problem. This degree topic should be number one on any ESL teacher's list of things to watch out for, in any country you apply for.
