What's the lowest amount I could reasonably expect to pay for a car? We're looking for the cheapest thing out there, preferably a little one so we can be cheap on fuel too, so long as it'll go 80km a day over some hills. Any estimates? Ideas on shopping? |

Facebook, here, and sometimes craigslist will have cars. You can get one between 500,000 and 1,000,000 won.
You will also need insurance and to register the car. (Put it in your name)
I think I've heard insurance can be as low as 400 a year. You cannot register the car I think unless you have a Korean driver's license. You can just swap your western one for a Korean. There is a bit of a process for this but try the search function. |

My mechanic in Itaewon can get you a really good ride for 1.5 mil and he'll even register (cost minimal for older cars) and warranty it. Always best to buy from mechanics if you ask me...
Feel free to mail me at [email protected] for his contact info. |

I bought a car here for 450,000 won plus another 780,000 won for a year of insurance. I've heard of people paying as low as 200,000 for insurance but was told by a couple companies that as a foreigner with no record this wasn't going to happen.
Check out the buy/sell/trade forum here. A lot of people are willing to sell their cars cheap(usually because they need to leave the country). It's not uncommon to find a car for under a million in this country that runs well. |

I bought an old atoz a little over two years ago. paid 340 for my first year of insurance as a driver in korea. I used Meritz insurance the car was a 97. these cars are really cheap and mine has been reliable. ugly as sin though and if i knew i was going to stay in korea much longer i'd upgrade in a heartbeat. |
