I've been wondering about this since I've been here. I know there's a tendency for Koreans to either ignore you or give you bad looks, but for the most part that really hasn't been too much of the case, other than when older women see me looking at the younger women and give me the "look". But I expect that.

However, what has really been interesting me lately is that almost every time I see a western foreigner, I get that look of "YOU MUST DIE". I was in the coex mall today just kind of wandering around, and almost every western foreigner I came across gave me the look of death. One smiled, which was cool, but almost all acted as if the presence of another westerner was a direct assault upon their personal being.

Any thoughts on this?

Maybe you represent the thing they are hiding from in their own country. You're bringing a dose of reality back into their lives. Look at what happened to the guy in "Lost Highway" when that happened. Went nuts.

I would never give a dirty look to another Westerner. I sometimes just smile or ignore, it depends.

There are a lot of dinks and pricks from back home over here in Korea. A lot of them are on this board.

White people love being the only white people in an 'ethnic' area.

Maybe it's just you? Sometimes we look for things which aren't there. A grumpy face doesn't always mean the person wearing the grumpy face is actually grumpy, it could be their natural face or just your interpretation of it. Occasionally I see foreigners and rejoice that I'm not the only ethnic person around, don't see how anyone would be angry at that.

i find it really odd that "foreigners" here in korea are offended by others not waltzing right up and shaking their hands. granted, you only wonder why people are scowling at you, but you obviously stared at them long enough to receive said facial expression (searching for...?).

wondering why they aren't more friendly is like me wondering why the russian hookers aren't more hospitable towards me. just because we look the same, or are obviously "foreign," doesn't mean we have some sort of affinity.

sorry you've been getting bad looks. over-analysis is a bit paranoid, though.

Exactly, so why should anybody take the chance that the desperate-looking white guy staring at you on the subway is not one of them?

Do you say hi to every white person you meet in other countries? I really don't have much in common with other white people at all, beyond language.

Haha. This is my turf!

I caught some Western douchebag getting hammered by himself on one of those little enclosed, wooden structures you find on the outskirts of parks. The only problem was that this one was practically on High School property, and all my students were walking by and gocking at him after class finished. He was by himself, drinking and eyeballing the female students. I heard "pyeontae" from a couple of them.

I almost popped a vein. He had the nerve to give me a dirty look, I was an inch away from telling him to scram in the worst possible way.

But yeah, a lot of foreigners are douchebags. Only talk to them if you can establish that they're not douchebags in advance.
