|
|
I have been here two years and still haven't filed any tax returns. Every American I know seems to think that we are exempt but I know for a fact we are still supposed to file. How the hell do we file our returns? I should add that this comes from someone who has only ever filed a return once in their whole life. |

We are exempt from paying taxes because we make below the threshold amount (about $80,000 or so per year), but we are NOT exempt from filing.
Go to http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/lists/0,,id=97817,00.html and download the 2007 tax forms:
Form 1040 (this is the standard tax form)
Form 2555 (this is the form for the exclusion)
Inst 1040 (instructions for filling out the 1040)
Inst 2555 (instructions for the 2555)
You'll also need to download the same forms from the prior year (2006) at:

Well, you also missed your chance to receive the economic stimulus, but they are saying that there might be another one. So, file your taxes! |

If you have no income in the USA for a whole tax year and have been out of the country for at least 320 (I think?) days of that tax year, you can file the 1040EZ and 2555EZ forms. They take like 5 minutes to fill them out and send them off. |

There are a number of organizations and companies that will let you do it online. Just do a search and see what looks best. You can file online and then either do an e-signature or send the printed page with it.
Last year it took me about 10 minutes. |

I have used www.citizentax.com for two years now. It was free for my income level. |

Actually, its 330 days that you are required to be out of the country. At least that the case, if you want to qualify for not paying taxes on foreign income less than $80 thousand. |
