A: Hey, man I really like that grease stain on your jeans.
B: Yeah, I was working on the '69 GTO I pulled out of Tiny's Junk Yard.
A: Is that red spot from the hunting trip when you got the 5 pointer?
B: Naw, that's a fresh ketchup stain from breakfast, and the buck was only a four pointer. |

| - I think the essential question is whether most men even care how about how their male friends and relatives look. The quotation posted by the OP seems to assume that we're all restraining ourselves out of fear of looking a bit flamboyant, but I think the root cause, ( certainly for myself and perhaps generally,) is more apathy. I don't care what my male friends look like or what they're wearing, as long as they're not cavorting around with their dangly bits out. |

| Well, generally men don't know much about the appearance of other men. An ex-girlfriend and I ran a test on this once. I pointed out guys that I thought would be considered attractive or ugly and she verified whether or not I was right. I was always correct about ugly, but had no consistency picking attractive. |
Maybe you have better taste than your ex-girlfriend, and that's what's causing the discrepancy. I have better taste in male beauty than most women I know. |

They probably bring other things into it like how much money they think the guy has or weather he'd enhance their social status by fucking them or whatever. |

Because if your boyfriend did that ONCE in front of your mother, your mother would warn you maybe your boyfriend was gay and she knew some friend of a friend whose husband was living a secret gay life and having unprotected sex with men in washrooms and maybe that's your future and how could you even think of having a child with a man who might infect you with HIV and you'd start asking around and find out lots of your female friends know of a man who lived such a secret life and you'd start to worry your boyfriend really was gay and every little limp wristed thing he did you would start to interpret as not him being sensitive but him being a closet homo and you'd not be able to sleep at night and you'd start doing things like reorganizing y our sweater drawer at 3 am because you believe it gives you some control over your life.
That's why. Geez. |
PRICELESS, and probably the most complete and succinct answer to this question. Seriously, I've read this post half a dozen times, and I still am laughing my ass off by the end of it, every time. Ohmygod, MM2, you missed your calling. (I'm not sure what that calling is, but you missed it. I'm sorry.)
(OP, if this doesn't answer your question, PM me, and I'll try to give a more thorough treatment to the subject. It's very complicated, touching on evolutional biology, sociological expectations, and deeply entrenched fear. "Oh my god, if I tell him he's beautiful, will he want to f*ck me in the ass? Or will I want to f*ck him in the ass? No, no, stop it, I can't stand it, nooooooooo." Or, as MM2 astutely points out, will my girlfriend/wife think any of these things if I acknowledage that I'm not, in fact, blind? Far too complicated, as you can see. Sad? Maybe. True? Oh yeah.) |

I've just noticed in my time what women say they want is not always emotionally/culturally what they really want. But no problem. Men are exactly the same. And probably a little worse. At least women make a brave show of trying to make work what they say they want.
My line is "I would never, ever date a stripper, unless she asked me." |

| north american men generally dress like complete shit thats why... they think its gay to dress up and look nice even if the event doesnt call for such. I comment on my friends attire and vise versa, we dress nicely and think about the things we are going to wear that night. I would say it is very important if you plan on scoring. I cringe when I see douche bags dressed up in american eagle and abercrombie fitch ... haha its such a terrible style and the ppl who wear these clothes are idiots and dont know how to dress. When I get to Seoul, see the way I dress and you will be jealous |

Men do comment on other mens appearance, not to the same extent as women but it is ok to tell your friend he has a 'cool shirt' or 'cool haircut' or he 'looks smart'.
And if they look like a dick you tell them that too. You laugh at their haircut, facial hair, take the mick out their shirts, that kind of thing. |

Shouldn't the question be the other way around?
If women were more like men, and weren't so obsessed with competing with each other over their appearance and dress...just think how much less of the world's resources would go into producing junk like fashion magazines, cosmetics, hair products, usless TV commercials, throw-away clothes and shoes, etc., etc., etc. |
Guys notice when chicks go without makeup, believe me. They might not understand what they're seeing, but they notice. Every time I've ever left the house in a hurry without makeup, some well meaning guy asks if I'm feeling okay. Apparently I look a little sickly without. |
Yes, but women do fashion and make-up for the sake of other women. |

exactly my point, you are probably hideous and have no idea how to dress. You think its gay when men put effort into their appearance, for some reason or another. i bet you cant dress worth shit and you still have clothes from high school that are really ratty, but you think theyre sweet cause theyre really old and youre going for that redneck look .. yup thats you for sure.. stop shopping at american eagle & crombie ... its already unfashionable, not that it ever was for people our age, but whatver |
