I heard a lot of that opinion growing up, and while I'm not sure how I feel about it (privilege, right), I do see how massive amounts of incoming students lessen the quality of education we all receive.

If I hadn't been slightly brainwashed into thinking I needed to get a BA, I might have done something slightly more rewarding and something I could be using at the moment...but whose to say I wouldn't have changed my mind.

I guess I lean towards the privilege side. Some people need the help, while others don't. OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) bought many a trip the Caribbean for a few friends of mine, while others slaved away. We all make mistakes...paying for them helps us not make them again. I'm still learning I guess.

because the poor 5 big established banks of canada only make a few billion a year each in profits?

free postsecondary education like france and sweden is the way to go

forgiving old student loans is the next best thing

in hindsight, i wish i'd taken out more government student loans and had less part time jobs during my university years

Did those banks bust down your door? Throw money at you? and drag you to University?

If not, it was YOUR choice. Why should others pay for your choices? You can whine and say it isn't that way in X country, but it is irrelevant. You knew what you were doing.. so be a responsible adult and pay back what you borrowed. Rolling Eyes

Well, regardless of what you think should be true, the truth is you sign a contract and promise to pay back X amount. You need to man up at some point. You don't get to decide "ah, rent should be free" too.

6 years of university my student debt load was $5,000 (with interest). That was back when the government gave half loans and half grants (free money). My friend just graduated medical school in the USA and her debt load is like $250,000. She was kind of grooving on Toronto (she's now working as a surgeon in Buffalo) but then I told her what doctors top out at in Canada vs the USA. She realized she'd not be able to retire her loan in Canada. (Although if we were married, I'm pretty good at budgeting...)

But yeah I believe the declare bankruptcy thingy was legislated around a long time ago. Also, if you declare bankruptcy you might jeopardize any future employment in financial services. For example, if you want to become qualified to sell financial products if you have a bankruptcy on your record you're barred forever from acquiring such certification.

It's just not worth it. Arrange a lower payment until you can start paying down your debt large. Don't carry a credit card debt and pay off the loan.

No, it should be free. Making money off peoples right to be educated should be illegal.

Well, most people do get free education until grade 12. I believe University is a privilege, not a right. Primary and Secondary education are rights. But, having a degree myself maybe effecting my opinion. Very Happy

youre stupid... its a privilege eh? give me a fn break ... anyone can go to university ... get your head out of your ass you snob... the more things that are free are better .... get over yourself

Damn us and our desire for higher education and to be wise to the ways of the world. hehehe Razz Razz Razz

Actually, it marks us as suckers to the ways of the world. Large numbers of us, myself included, believed the myth that we need higher education, when in fact, it is not suitable for a large number of us.

Go to Hongdae. Swing a dead cat. You will hit one of us.

The whole point of getting it was so I could have the chance of working in different countries without having to join the army. I think it was probably not suitable for me (hated university!) but I went and finished and now I'm here. Paid off my loan, saving some money, and next year I'm going somewhere else. Life is good.

In Canada where university is highly subsidized, it is done under the understanding government investment in higher education pays a dividend later on. And certainly it's hard to doubt that greater access to eduction results in economic benefits. So in a sense "free is better".

I think one is creating a false dichotomy, however, in defining things as a "right" vs a "privileged". Driving certainly provides economic benefits. Ignoring the environmental cost, a more mobile population has led to great economic benefits. However, driving is certainly not a right, as we are told often, but a privilege. No?

There are some things that are good for society and the economy and we should strive for greater access. However, we don't simply issue drivers licensees at age 16.

Ultimately, we need to ration things, no? For example, you shouldn't need an MRI for a headache. Personally, I'd like a full body scan once a week. As would nearly everyone of a certain age.
