Hi there, I need some advice about buying a new laptop but I'm not sure what to expect for a million won. I mainly want it for browsing the internet and watching or burning movies that I've downloaded and during working writing lesson plans.
Any ideas?
Before anyone starts I'm not interested in getting a PC. |

I'd say you can get a decent one for around a million. Maybe in the 1.1 million range or under shouldn't be a problem. |

You mean you want a Mac? A laptop is a PC. Maybe you mean you don't want a desktop.
For your needs, anything with a decent sized hard drive.....maybe 160GB.........and avoid anything with fancy video components. You don't need them. |

i bought a used dell pentium 3 laptop 2 years ago for $300. i can surf internets and watch or burn CDs/DVDs no problem. i probably couldn't give the thing away these days. there is no reason for you to spend more than $500!
p.s. i'm also assuming you mean you don't want a desktop, not that you don't want a PC. there is absolutely no reason for you to buy a mac, other than to sound cool when talking to other mac users. |

I consider a laptop to mean a portable computer to use on your lap and would generally not consider a PC to be portable. I guess the distinction is a little blurred these days but before PC's first came out the smallest computers around literally took up a very large room and weren't exactly all that personal either.

I think 100 GB would be enough for my needs as I intend downloading files onto a portable hard drive. |

You can get an average laptop her for a million won. Back home for the same money, you could get an above average laptop with decent video card, processor.
Laptops are way overpriced here. |

No, I don't really care about playing computer games. |

Can you tell me what sort of specifications that I can for a million won. i.e. screen size, processor speed, memory, video card etc.
I was think about having one sent from the states but figure by the time I pay the postal delivery costs I'll end up paying the same as here anyway. |

I have an HP that I paid a thousand for in the states a year ago. I now see them at the electronics market for like 850,000 won. I have had good luck with my HP doing pretty much what you want it to do. |

If you can avoid import tax (ie: get someone to bring it over for you) then it will be cheaper to buy in the states.
As for PC, it does indeed mean "personal computer" so the CORRECT usage would be to call any computer that a person owns a PC. However, the screwed up mainstream use is as follows:
Computer running windows: PC
Computer running Linux: Unknown to mainstream users
Computer built by Apple: Mac
Computer with a battery: Laptop/Notebook
"Regular" computer: Desktop
Incidentally, the better terms are
Windows box
Linux box
Mac
Laptop
Desktop |

I got a new Toshiba laptop back in May for $550 US after tax at an Office Depot store back home. It was an $850 model, but they sold me the last one, a display model with discounts. Luckily it was sitting too high for kids to pound on it during the 2 or 3 months it sat there.
Now, other models with similar specs are still going for around 800,000 Korean won in Korea. Computers technology have really hit a plateau where the 3 month old model is just as good as the newest model.
1 million won seems like a lot, but you might get a really high end big screen gamer laptop with the highest powered graphics card and dedicated video RAM. It ought to look like something out of Star Trek. |

For one million you should be able to get a very good desktop or a fairly good laptop, depending on your need for portability vs. performance. |
