Hello everyone,
I'm a little new to Korea (two months) and was interested in knowing the current 'it' spots around Seoul, specifically Hongdae. I've already been out there a few times and I dont really see what all the fuss is about. It just seems like a bunch of rowdy drunken English teachers and army guys spilling out in the streets. I tried chatting up a couple hot Korean girls in this one club we went to, I think it was called Harlem NYC or something but they kind of gave me the cold shoulder. Maybe because I dont know Korean yet? Also that place was swarming with GUYS, both Korean and Western Is there any places around that where the girls a little bit more friendly to chat a white guy with virtually no Korean ability? I also tried going out around my area with co-workers to to a few places but they all just seem like the equivalent of western restaurants back home, just sit at a table, order your food, then get up and leave when your done..I'm not desperate to get a girlfriend but I'm also kinda curious about Asian women.
Anyway, any advice would be appreciated, thanks. This stuff's all new to me..

The fact that you use "western friendly" and "the same back home" is ironic.
Hongdae and Itaewon are probably the most "western friendly" places in Seoul, meaning lots of foreigners go there. And those "blackies" you refer to are foreigners just like you.
If you want "authentic" Korea experience it doesn't go hand in hand with "western friendly".
And if you want to meet authentic Korean girls and not so much Korean party girls who like to hook up with foreigners, learn Korean.
Perhaps unintentional, but your post comes across as both a bit racist and ignorant. Just because you're white doesn't mean Korean girls are going to be all over you. |

Yeah I should clarify that..when I said "like back home" I meant the places they call 'bars' here seem like going to Applebees back home, just sit at a table, order your food, then leave. No mingling.
Actually that's probably the best idea to learn Korean but I'm not sure if I'm sure if I wanna invest the time into it because I dont know yet if I'll stay beyond a year or two. So I guess the next best thing would be to check out some of those places where all the party girls hang out... You have any specific recommendations? Actually I see western guys with hot Korean gfs sometimes on the street but I assume they know some Korean or have a bigger social network than me so they have a chance to meet girls more often. I didnt see too many pick ups in that place I went to compared to bars back in my home town (Outside Philly).
Sorry the blackies thing was just a joke, pure sarcasm

one (and most importantly), you were probably rejected because you're a retard.
two, you might wanna ask a few of the "blackies" (where the hell do you come from?!) if they've had better luck with the "slant-eyed babes." (i added that one for you, since you were a bit modest in your first description of the "hot korean girls." i figured since we were being "politically correct," i'd allow you some breathing room.)
advice: you're probably going to keep getting rejected if you refer to any specific race or culture in a derogatory manner. |

Koreans don't "mingle" in the way Americans are used to. Good luck talking to anyone you don't already know, anywhere in Korea. I think your call for "western friendly" just doesn't make any sense. The chances of anyone going out of their way to be "unfriendly" are pretty slim but Koreans are "unfriendly" to people they don't know in general. Koreans you are already friends with, of course, are often very welcoming/ outgoing. Few people speak (emphasis on speak) enough English for you to be able to talk to them in a bar.
Itaewon is dominated by non-Koreans - but I think the nighlife there is horrid - Volume is good if you want a discotec. Itaewon is a better place to eat.
Hongdae has students (most lively by far), Apkujeong is more upmarket - my second choice. Shinchon is ok, Jongno is ok but is dead after midnight. |

that's not up to me to decide or determine. are you trying to justify someone using a ridiculously backward racial term in their post? |

My co-worker also told me there are some hook-up sites on the internet under the guise of "English-exchange" clubs where Korean girls who wanna date western guys go. Anybody had luck on any of those? |

I find the most western-friendly bars are the ones that get the least westerners. We went to one of those typical western-style bars a while ago so my friends could play darts, and the owner glared at us the whole time and was hostile to my wife.
The best place to get friendly service and a drink in Hongdae, in my opinion, is Roots Time, a new reggae pub over on Picasso Street up toward the station.
But basically, the best, cheapest place to drink is the playground. |

Also, the last Friday of the month is club day....so that would be the 31st for October. You get a wristband at any participating club which gives you free entrance to all other participating clubs. Just look for the signs that say 'club day'.
I don't really get ruffled about '_________ friendly' bars...I guess maybe I just don't pick up on the unfriendly ones. Just be kind and respectful, and if someone is a dick, take the higher road.
edit...club day is in Hongdae. oopsy. |
