Hello,

I have 3 jobs I'm looking at. I'm in the late stages of making a decision and wanted to get some other people's perspective. 2 are in Korea, and 1 is in China.

Job 1
Korea, big city, 2.2million, split shifts 30 hours per week, some Saturday work, housing allowance (200,000 provided)

Job 2
Korea, big city, 2.2million, split shifts 30 hours per week, maybe some Saturday work, housing provided

Job 3
China, small city (relatively), 5000RMB (about 1 million won), 12-16 hours per week, 4 days a week, housing provided (2 bedrooms and living room).

So, which job would you choose? and why?

I hope this is a joke!

If not, are you serious man?? -Split shifts?
-2.2 with Saturdays???
-200 housing allowance???? I guess that's almost enough for 30 nights in a Jimjibang Rolling Eyes

You've been here since 2006... aim higher my friend. If these are your options, then go with China.

The best one is 2, but that is like saying "Which disease is the best?" Why not look for option 4 (2.5 million won, no Saturdays, apartment)

The less than attractive salary / Saturday work are a result of the schools being adult only affairs. I could probably get better contracts for teaching kids, but I want to teach adults. I've not seen many 'decent' paying adult hagwons to be honest.

Look, if it were me - I would give the China option a go for a couple of months. If you liked it, stay the year.

Korea is not going anywhere - if the China job goes ass up.

Split shifts are the devil. Go to China if you can't find a better job here.

No matter how low your credentials are, you can do better in Korea. The China one is fairly standard, but you could still do better.

I can't believe you'd give job 1 and 2 the time to copy-and-paste them. If those came in my email I'd be hitting the delete button as soon as I saw '2.2 million / split shifts'.

Job 3 is half the time and only half the salary. I'm sure it would allow for extra work, and I believe the Chinese currency is not going belly up.

My friend just visited from Shanghai. She's making 20,000RMB ($2,900 US) and her friend is making 30,000 ($4,500)RMB. One teaches at a pre-school the other at a private school. You can do much better than this.

What are their qualifications?

^ They don't have any special qualifications. The usual BA and a couple of years experience. One speaks Chinese. My friend told me to find good jobs in Shanghai you gotta shop around but they can be found. I also know that lots of expats there do things other than teach. There are better opportunities for getting out of teaching there.

The downside - living in China.
