The Korean Government is giving tax refunds to offset the high oil/petroleum prices in the 2007 tax year. This is available to income earners of less than 36,000,000won gross per year (i.e., most hagwon/ uni teachers). You will need the appropriate documentation including salary statements and application forms. I have just completed this with the help of my employer and will be getting a very healthy sum. If your employer doesn't assist you with this they are either not paying taxes correctly or are just plain useless.

As a side note the tax administration at my university stated that Korean Immigration let all foreigners know about this refund. Did all foreign workers in Korea receive a group email about it recently? I don't think so.

Judging from the size of my refund foreigners can get between 250,000 and 400,000 won. You will need to hurry to get the refund as the window of opportunity closes shortly.

I wish I knew more on the topic but that's it.

It would be good if they would actually assist foreigners in getting this. I don't speak Korean. Management had no clue about this one at my academy. I suppose mostly public schools and universities know about this since they are connected to the government. I am not sure hagwon people know about this.

I also hear that the paperwork is pretty much all in Korean. I somehow find the thought of my hogwon charitably helping with that part of it highly unlikely.

For my region, the deadline was either Monday or last Friday. In any case, it has passed. I got this myself because of some posters on this board and I fortunately can speak Korean and had all my tax documents handy. Schools ALL know about this, as you'll find a stack of these documents in the accounting department. Pretty bum deal that so many schools don't go out of their way in the least to help out their foreign staff. No money outta their pocket book, but would go a long way towards the foreign staff's morale, I imagine, to take care of it for them and then let them know they're getting a "bonus."

I missed the deadline, because I saw it on Dave's too late. I would have talked to the tax office myself if I knew. I am eligible, but I do not speak Korean, and my academy isn't helpful. They had no clue about it. If I worked for a university, then it would be different, perhaps. When you say schools know about this do you mean public schools and universities only? That would make sense, but how would the academies know about this?

I also complained that it is all in Korean and information was hard to find. I got called a whiner.

There are some real scumbags on this site, ones I wouldn't piss on if they were on ire.

The deadline is the end of the month for your employer. Of course they don't want to do it at the last minute, so the sooner, the better.

Something on the website said the 28th though, so I think people should hand them in on Monday at the latest.

EVERYONE, the consensus for the 2007 oil-hike tax refund deadline seems to be the end of this month (Oct 31). So, get on to it and get what's yours.

Points to note:
24,000,000 won and under salary earners get 180,000 rebate.
24,000,000 to 36,000,000 won get 240,000 rebate.

To get this done yourself get a Korean friend and follow this event post on facebook:

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?sid=5a0061f387cf16535371ddd9088db359&refurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fs.php%3Fq%3D240%252C000%2Bwon%26n%3D-1%26k%3D400000000010%26sf%3Dr%26init%3Dq%26sid%3D5a0061f387cf16535371ddd9088db359&eid=45775441304

Otherwise hit up the tax department in your institution and have them assist you.

DON"T TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER THIS IS FOR EVERYONE WHO PAID TAXES AND EARNT MONEY IN KOREA IN 2007.
