A few years ago I used to see this more often, but haven't noticed so much in the recent past. As I was driving to school today in my new area (where there are relatively no foreigners) I came across a waegookin walking that had a red backpack on that had big bold white letters on it. Much to my non-surprise, those letters spelled out CANADA. Is it a pride thing or what? I'm not trying to be condescending, but I have never seen foreigners blatently display their country of origin the way Canadians do.

They're probably just trying to show all their Korean neighbors that they are not American, and thus, no need to glare.

Could be; although I can't fathom the dynamics behind that.

americans have pissed off a lot of people in the world and canadians find they've been better received when others find out they are canadian despite being initially mistaken for american

this is my own experience in at least five countries and i've heard about this for years before i ever travelled

though i've never sewn anything on, i have bought shorts with 'canada' on it and have a cap as well

That's why this American has a bad habit of responding to people in German when they approach him on the street (the Koreans, not other Europeans). I'd rather not apologize for a president I didn't vote for.

What do Canadians have to be proud of besides being located near the US of A?

Donovan Bailey still??

Fair enough, but why the display factor of the patches, flags and the like? Is it just to outwardly display that one is not American when travelling?

Defining your own nationality on NOT being from another country? Sounds extremely insecure.

I have been here for several years and have worked with NSETS from all over, but I have yet to see a particular persuasion of people being so adamant about outward displays of their nationality. It is either the backpacks with the patch or flag, the maple leaf stickers they give, the stamps that they grade with, or even the lessons that I have witnessed involving why Canada is so great. I honestly don't see the necessity to be so overbearing in that respect.

How is that defining your nationality?

Although not all Canadians are, nor are all Americans, but many Canadians and Americans can be proud that they aren't ignorant mongrels such as yourself. There are many things we are proud of, but I am not going to waste my time explaining it to someone such as yourself, who probably couldn't comprehend and doesn't even care. You didn't ask the question because you wanted an answer, you are simply taking a shot at Canadians.

Stop trolling.

Because the other guy said the only reason he proudly displays Canada paraphernalia on everything he owns while traveling is so people don't confuse him for being from the USA.

This American is gonna get him self a maple-leaf backpack. No one will even know who my adopted county's leader is*, or what my adopted country even does**, so I won't have to apologize for SQUAT.

*Trudeau, right? What?! When did that happen?

**Absolutely nothing would be my guess.

As neither a Canuck or an American, I find the tittle-tattle between the maple leafed backpackers and the worlds most compulsive flag wavers highly amusing.

Kettle. Pot. Black etc
