What do you think of the korea LP? i found it fairly useful and a little amusing.. the author showed some thinly veiled sarcasm and dislike of certain things here...!
For example he writes on the increasing % families opting to have boys and aborting girls here, and how this will lead to a bride shortage in the future:
"One plan is for Korea to import eligible brides from poorer Asian countries. However, few foreign women are likely to put up with the behavior that is typical of korean men. Expect the status, value and respect for Korean women to take an historic leap forward in years to come!"

Yes, the undertone is delightful Smile. I can't recall any specific examples just now, but I've laughed at some real zingers.

I also have the LP Korean phrasebook, which is saving my arse right now. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but it's practically all I've got besides my eyes and ears.

Personally, I always find it more than slightly ironic that LP guides to Southeast Asia and Latin America so incredibly manage to conceal like a gaping wound the histories of abjection, debt, loss, anguish...

You have to read the "History" section in each book to get this. And you will get it, believe me.

I'm a little surprised to see LP get such praise here. The Korea one is pretty much useless, and the undertone is condescending. As for the rest of the LP library, I found the more I travelled the less I needed them, and just use the internet like TECO said, or talk to people once I get there.

I find them invaluable when first traveling in a country. I am kicking myself all over for not having one with me right now! But now I certAINLY HAVE NO NEED FOR THE Korean one anymore. I know how to get places.

I'm reading Ireland LP guide right now. I got it at a garage sale along with a slew of Fodors - all European and all from 2003. Ten books in all for 5 pesos! Smile

Fez, I liked that place. Hated it during my first visit though. I am nostalgic for it now that im going through medinas here in tunisia, which are bland in comparison.

What did you do in fez?

Guess I should have sent a PM, oh well.

I am using a rough guide for Tunisia, its ok. Looked through LP, looked much better. On flipside, found RG to thailand to be great.

LP Korea was crap. LP Malaysia was the best LP i have used, it was great. Vietnam was ok.

I was visiting with the family of a friend, and so didn't see a lot of touristy stuff. A quick run through the medina on my last day there! I thought Fs was kind of dirty and characterless, at least in the new parts. I liked Taza a lot.

I have an old LP Korea, 3rd edition, with this gem of advice:
Quote:
Women travellers often find that their periods become irregular or even cease while they're on the road.

I consistently do not menstruate for 3-4 months when I arrive in Korea and this advice has saved my nerves numerous times!

If anyone wants to buy my Taiwan Lonely Planet, let me know. I bought it for a 4-day trip to Taiwan. It cost 29,980 won at Kyobo. I'll sell it for 12,000 won.

Even better I have all the Taipei bars highlighted in yellow on every map of Taipei. Other than the bar highlighting, its pretty fresh and new.
I might. We'll have to see how the battle with the old Korean boss goes as well as the job I get while I'm doing that. I might be moving there yet.

Yeah, the newer parts of Fez were dull but the medina is the fun part; well besides the touts. A couple times I wasnt bothered by any, while other times I was always bothered by them. I couldnt figure out the logic. Nice avatar there Oigirl, I can understand the slogan too, woo hoo (always refreshing)

I have an LP guide for the Middle East, we shall see how good it is. The RG for Tunisia led me to a gem of a city; if not for that and the maps, I would be tempted to torch the sucker. The hotels it hyped were total crap usually. I discovered the ones it wrote the least about were good.

The touts at the medina in Fez were the worst I saw in Morocco outside of Tangier and Tetuan. Just unrelenting. It probably didn't help that I was with a sexy 25 year old blonde there though. They get that divide and conquer strategy going and the best thing that you can do is just hire one of them for 2$ to keep the rest at bay. This was in the middle of a sandstorm too so it was all quite ...... bemusing.
