|
|
I've been told that LG is the only company who lets foreigners/E2 visa holders get a phone contract.
I'm tired of spending a fortune on cards, anyone know a friendly LG outlet who will let me sign a contract? |

I had trouble in Daegu where I am teaching, I went to a LG shop downtown and they told my co-teacher I had to be here a year before they could sign me up. They said it was a new law or something., But while I was in Seoul shopping near Yongsan station I tried an LG shop there and had no trouble just had to have my ARC and my bank book and I got a phone no problem even did it by myself. |

I think that both KT and SK offer contract phones to foreigners, but SK require a W200,000 deposit and KT probably have something similar, like a Korean co-signatory.
I got my LG phone at the Sinchon station store - was in and out in half an hour. |

There is no law prohibiting selling or even renting a cell phone to foreigners nor is there a law requiring a different amount for deposit than that for a Korean citizen. There isn't any requirement to have a Korean cosign for you either. |

To get around that 200,000W deposit, have a Korean register the phone under their name. Once everything is set up, call the company so you can arrange to have the bill sent to you. |

And that fact does nothing to help the OP who wants a phone.

Too much of a hassle. Just go into any LG store and follow these steps:
1.) point to the phone you want
2.) sign contract with the fewest options you can get, you don't need fancy shit
3.) give bankbook and ARC to clerk to make copies (auto bill pay)
4.) pay for phone and activation
5.) walk out of store with new contract phone |

Get a Korean pal to take you. I got my girlfriend to do it for me and they were falling over themselves to sell me one. This was at LG. She can be quite forceful and got them to drop some random charges as well.
Later on she told me, they told her they wouldn't have sold it to me if I was by myself. |

Last year around the same time the English-language newspapers were discussing discrimination against foreigners, they were also discussing the laws barring fronting for someone to get a credit account in your name. They mentioned that cell phone contracts are considered credit accounts here. |

I was told the airport has cell phone kiosks. Is this still true? I am flying in next week and will be looking to purchase a phone right away. Can I get a phone with a basic contract from my employer as evidence? |

they do have cell phone kiosks, but they're for renting, not buying. you can rent a cell phone for the first few weeks if you must have one, but it gets kind of expensive. i'm pretty sure you need to have an arc card and bankbook to buy a cell phone in korea. |

As long as you have a legit ARC card, you should not have any problems getting a phone contract. If anyone tells you different, tell them they're full of shyt and go to the next phone shop. God knows they're a dime a dozen, even in the most backwater towns. You'll find one that will gladly take your business....You'll even get a new phone either for free with your signup or for a riduculously low price...Good luck and don't accept NO/'andeyo' for an answer... |
