TOKYO: A 43-year-old Japanese woman whose sudden divorce in a virtual game world made her so angry that she killed her online husband's digital persona has been arrested on suspicion of hacking, police said Thursday.
The woman, who is jailed on suspicion of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating electronic data, used his identification and password to log onto popular interactive game "Maple Story" to carry out the virtual murder in mid-May, a police official in northern Sapporo said on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.
"I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry," the official quoted her as telling investigators and admitting the allegations.
The woman had not plotted any revenge in the real world, the official said.
She has not yet been formally charged, but if convicted could face a prison term of up to five years or a fine up to $5,000.
Players in "Maple Story" raise and manipulate digital images called "avatars" that represent themselves, while engaging in relationships, social activities and fighting against monsters and other obstacles.
The woman used login information she got from the 33-year-old office worker when their characters were happily married, and killed the character. The man complained to police when he discovered that his beloved online avatar was dead. |

There's a Ray Bradbury story about a guy who gets sentenced to die for murdering a life-like robot version of his wife. But of course, in this Japanese case, the guy has been charged merely with hacking. Which is understandable. |

Surprised she didn't claim virtual self-defence against virtual rape. I'd suggest some virtual community service, cleaning up spam and stuff. |

Thanks for posting this.
These online-persona games are far out. There was an article in Bust a few issues ago that ran about Second Life, and it blew my mind.
just read the wiki article on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Life
-The Maldives was the first country to open an embassy in Second Life.
-By the beginning of 2008, scheduled live music performance events in Second Life spanned every musical genre, and included hundreds of live musicians and DJs who perform on a regular basis. A typical day in Second Life will feature dozens of live music performances.
-Second Life girls are rated #95 on the "Top 100 Hottest Females of 2007" in Maxim.
-In 2006 former Governor of Virginia Mark Warner became the first politician to appear in a MMO when he gave a speech in Second Life.
There was something in the Bust article about someone who killed another dude in real life, because he knew the real guy was cheating on his real wife with some second life chick...and the three (two real dudes and one second life chick) were in some freaky love triangle. |

MAPLE STORY???
Has this game been upgraded somewhat?
I remember in 2004 my elementary school students liked to play this game. I didn't know adults played it and got married in it. Maybe some of my elementary school students were married?
I've heard nothing about it from college kids the last couple of years. In fact I've heard nothing about Maple Story fullstop for a couple of years until now.
Strange story anyway. |
