Outside school hours?

Saying hello back to a fellow random English teacher is off limits and I can see why (though I don't agree with the rationale) but how many of you miserable shower - the ones who had a personality bypass at birth ignore the pupils you teach when you see them on the street?

'Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Teachuuuuuuuur'

'Sod off kid - the 22 hours are up'

I bet there are quite a few on here! Cool

It happens a lot. Most of my students live close to the school as do I.

I say hello when I can, smile and wave if I'm in the mood and sometimes I even walk along side them if they're headed in the same general direction. I don't see what the big fuss is. They look up to you.

I greet my own pupils but don't pay much attention to other school's kids. In my small town many kids from other schools are my students' friends or siblings, so I'm usually friendly. In other places I really don't have the time of day for the hello chorus anymore.

Oh I totally agree - I wouldn't day hello to every passing pissant who goes 'hiiiiiiiiiiii hehehehe' but like Incognito - I live near my school and live in the same area as many of my pupils and when I see them say hello which leads to a basic conversation and 'byeeeeeeeee'

I didn't realised they looked up to us - I always thought we were a figure of fun until I did a 30 second speech to kick off sports day and got a massive cheer! It was nice that I am making an impact - however small.

I really hate the little ones
who laugh and sing and shout.
When they ask me 'how ah you?'
I lay the *&$@ers out.

I am a bitter, crusty man:
I hate a happy sound.
And if a tyke says "herro, sir!"
I'll put them in the ground.

They should be seen, and never heard,
And shouldn't talk to me.
And if they try, then they may die,
if they won't let me be.

My skin is thick as cedar bark.
My bite is sharp and mean.
And if you say "good mornin', dude!"
I'll stab you in the spleen.

tomato wrote a song about it. link wouldn't work though, sorry tomato

I live within 6 minutes walking to my school. I say hi and talk to them more as they have more social graces than a lot of idiots in the school doing the rapid fire hello.

i'll talk to my own students (thank god for school uniforms), i'll say hello and maybe ask an easy question or two if the parents are there. kids from other schools, i'll probably say hello back if they say it nicely (meaning, they don't scream it at me multiple times), but many times i can't hear what they say cause i have my headphones permanently on Wink

The kids I teach just stare at me if they see me outside of the school even if it's directly outside of the building I work in. I say hello and they just stare. These kids are weird as all hell.

Every time I see a Korean kid within a mile of my school I try to look friendly b/c I can't recognize all of them. I teach 650 kids for Christs' sake. Sometimes I'll just say hi anyway.

I say as many hellos and goodbyes as possible, when coming in and leaving.

I say hello, but not in English. Outside of class, I speak Korean (or with some students, Japanese)

Unless I really don't feel like indulging them I will speak English to them. I even try to have a conversation like I would in class. If I really don't want to speak English I either say "I don't speak English" or respond in French only.

I am generally friendly and say hello, especially if they're my students. But if they're not mine and are following me and pointing at the 'weird yellow-haired foreigner' like I'm in a specimen jar, as happens too often here, they will definitely get a dirty look and not a hello.
