It HAS to be a fair amount for what one would consider "average" back in the US and Canada (and Europe and Australia for that mattter).

I don't know if it's near or far sightedness, that is the issue, but clearly there is something afoot here and out of the ordinary (at least our "ordinady")

what gives?

can't be simply because of the cramming, can it?

great question!! I have been wondering that myself. There are far more people in SK who wear them than other Asian countries too! And if the answer is 'because they can afford them', then why are we not seeing more with contact lenses?

My guess is the amount of studying they do.... but that is a real uneducated GUESS at best.

I think it must have something to do with the poor lighting. Fluorescent lighting isn't great for your eyes and that is all there is here. It is terrible light to read under.

Lots of people in the USA do, too.

Sometimes I wonder if the food we eat has caused excessive growth, and also screwy growth in the eyes, or whatnot. Weird.

Just thought about something else (and no, I don't really believe this, but...). I remember growing up my mom always saying to eat my carrots because they are good for my eyes. Last week, I asked two seperate classes of university students what food they don't like. Out of 21 students, 18 chose carrots as the food they didn't like. This was on a paper, so they also didn't know what their classmates had said. So, I asked the other 3 if they did like carrots and they all did. Strange.

I wondered that too at first......I guesses it was because of the non stop playing of Starcraft in the PC bangs 24 hours a day but I`m told the glasses thing is a `fashion thing` in regards to the guys......

Two reasons.....

To look smart...................

................. and because glasses are way over-prescribed like every other medical treatment in Korea. Check out some of your students' glasses. They barely magnify.

When you find yourself sitting in a class of 12 year-olds and every single kid is wearing glasses.....then you can guess something is up.

I've heard Koreans give the excuse that it's because their kids study so much they get eye-strain.....bull........I read non-stop when I was a kid and never got eye-strain.

Funny! I just asked my boss this very same question during lunch about ago to why the majority of the korean male population wear glasses, he took a quick look at me and then went on to talk about today's schedule, lol.

My best guess is a combination, over-studied, the combination of korean alphabets that formed into words, excessive gamings; less expoure to sunlights (usually staying indoor ), genetics.

Many Korean kids WANT galsses (especially by the time they are entering Middle school)...

They BELIEVE that wearing glasses makes you look Handsome/pretty...

(to tell the truth - I can't stand the looks of people wearing glasses) - its like they are handicapped...

other things include -

constant staring at computer screens whilst excessively playing computer games -

sitting 1 metre in front of huge televisions....

korean very bright lighting in apartments...

and their poor genetics... (most Koreans just follow the group - like a herd of sheep - so they don't need good eyesight) - just follow the herd...

My two cents worth:

too much masturbation (remember what you heard when you were a kid -
ie, leads to blindness)

inbreeding (causes genetic deficiencies like blindness)

playing computer games too much (Starcraft, Special Forces, etc.) in smoky PC bangs

studying too much

Genetics...plain and simple.

A homogenous society like Korea would naturally have a high degree of inherited traits and deficiencies over the centuries.

A lot of inbreeding has gone on over the years in "closed" places like Korea or Sweden for example.
