Hey folks,

I am going to be teaching in Gwangju (not Seoul) in about 3 weeks. Are there any good artist's shops around with decent ink or oil paints? Also, I am working on a mural that is ten feet long and 5ish feet high, and I was hoping to bring it along with me in my checked baggage. The roll is probably around 15 lbs but I am worried that its shape will be unwieldy so far as baggage goes. Anyone know if I would be better off shipping it to myself later or if I might be able to pay a little extra to bring it with me when I fly?

Thanks in advance

you picked a good place to go for artists - gwangju actually has a very nice artists district with plenty of stores to buy supplies

I'm so sorry tho, I can't give you any info about where they are - but don't worry - when you arrive I'm sure someone there can tell you - I live in Seoul - and haven't been to Gwangju except for visiting so don't know directions

as for your mural - that's a hard question - I wouldn't trust putting it on a plane - anything could happen - how about shipping it? wait until you are settled in and have someone send it to you? then you can see if you even have enough light and space - or you can make arrangements to find a place to work -

good luck - Laughing

Yeah, there are alot of art shops....can't speak of the quality of the stuff...there also should be more if you go around the university areas(like Konkuk).

Oh great. That puts less pressure on me to find good ink and supplies before heading over and then figuring out how to bring them with me. Thanks for the responses.

You guys wouldn't happen to know if there are any decent drawing / painting classes offered in English would you?

Thanks,

Jack

When I lived there, there were at least a few art courses for Koreans along Art Street. (Watercolors for example.) English courses though? No idea.

You might be able to find some information yourself if you dig around a bit. A quick Google search brought this up for example:

Also, I gather there's an international center. If you contact them, they might point you in the right direction:

Good luck.
