Actually Daewoo snapped up Ssang-Yong, but they still run it independently. GM bought out Daewoo as you see a lot of newer Daewoo cars have the GM-Daewoo stickers on them.
I made a mistake about Kia, it was Hyundai that bought them out. I couldn't remember exactly, even though I drive by their HQ in Seoul at least once a week.
So overseas, Hyundai plants make Kia/Hyundai cars/SUVs...in Korea, I think cause of the unions, they still have Kia factories etc. As they promised to keep XXX many jobs for XXX many years after the merger.
Lush...it is kind of a given if you work at a big chaebol, you would work at one in my list. There are a couple more...KT is one and that huge shipbuilding company...chejin or something like that...has a JIN as last part of the name. |

I have to agree if I read that right. Most of my friends are teachers & while my wife runs 'our' study room; I am not a teacher either.
I am preparing an ebook explaining how to work outside the ESL industry and make real cash. Not to be insulting however 1.9-2.1 is rather a low salary for a native English speaker in this country in my opinion. |
Do you need Korean language to work outside the ESL industry? I am assuming you do, but thought I'd ask anyway. |

Ssang-Yong is for sale now.

My boss does not speak any English. I am still learning Korean, of course, but it is enough to communicate with him.

Not necessarily. It depends on what you do. I have friends, who cant say anything in Korean, that work outside of the ESL game here. As for me, it helps, but if I didnt speak any Korean it wouldnt impact my job that much. All of the interviews I went on were conducted entirely in English. |

What do you do? What do your friends do? I am on the last lap and a half of a law degree right now and before that I worked in Korea (as an ESL teacher - Wonderland Sanbon). It sounds interesting (I would never teach ES-Hell there again, but I still miss the place). Do you do math stuff or computer related stuff, or is it some sort of commerce or corporate liason type thing? |

While I wont specifically comment on what I do, my good friend, Lee (first name- short for Leon) works at SK and cant even say thank you in Korean! He is really against learning Korean. Actually hes a bit of a bastard! What does he do? He edits things written in Konglish and corrects them. His job is really interesting! YOU WOULDNT BELIEVE THE STUFF HE HAS TO EDIT! (Well, if you have been here for a while you probably WOULD believe it!)
If you are a law major why dont you write to Brendon through his blog at http://brendon.typepad.com? Additionally I read most of the blogs listed on the Marmots site (in addition to his!) at http://marmot.blogs.com/korea/
Whatever you do, do not go to http://korea.blogs.com !!! Its a free Korean porno site! I was trying to find blogs on the net about Korea and, on a hunch, tried that! IGO |

Most ex-pat company employees get well over Y350,000 per month for rental allowance alone as part of their package.
That's bout what most EFL'ers make in monthly salary, never mind rent
Talked to one young Canadian lawyer in teh gym who had just arrived and his company was sarting him off at Y700,000 per month! |

you guys sound so ridiculous whenever you use the term "chaebol".
No one in korea says that. If you want to say I work at a big company, say dae gi up, don't say "I work at Chaebol" you sound uneducated and plain stupid.
The term chaebol is used informally to talk about the company presidents and owners. |

I have worked for the Korean government in the utility business for five years. I was asked not to learn Korean so as to encourage its usage in the workplace. As a result I knew more Korean when I joined the company then I do now. Damn, now THAT is embarrassing!

That is the lion's share of my job as well. I work with our companies Overseas Projects Department and help them with the documentation involved in bidding for projects, I write business letters, edit the homepage, even write the company's CEO's Xmas card!
Started as a Company Language Instructor and have steadily watched that part of my job disappear (only 8 classes a week with the rest of my 40 hour week doing other things; including doing nothing while waiting for the next project!). |

Instead of my hagwon job in Busan, I almost took an editing position up in Daejeon. I'm interested in Daoism personally, and saw the job ad of editing Konglish for an international Daoist organization as a Godsend!
After a bit of research, it turned out it's a freaky cult... they seem to be hiring every month or so, presumably because the foreigners they hire keep running away in terror...
Ask anybody here in Korea about Daoism and they'll spit more venom then while talking about Japan or the US! |

| If you're not a teacher then why the hell are you posting on eslcafe? I dont care where u work or that yu probably make more money than me and that you obviously have better working conditions than most of us, this is an ESL website, no one cares where you work. |

Dominic....
I think someone needs to read the thread and realize some people do care and have asked for information...You know, if you don't want to read this thread there is no one sitting there actually forcing you to click on it.
Other than that it sounds like someone has got a real case of envy going on. |

| I did read the whole thread thank you very much, I read nothing about anyone asking that guy to post something not even close to being related to the ESL industry or teaching. He sounds like an arogant jackass if you ask me. Envy? Thats a laugh, why would I be about a guy who couldnt find a real job in his own country so he came here and who's going to die from liver damage next week. |
