Why are you leaving?
Where are you headed?
Will you exchange all your won before you go?
Do you think you will ever return to work here?

As long as soju stays around 1000 won I don't give a flyingfuck what happens.

Put that in as response circle seven.
Or, replace it with circle three.

"I haven't found a reason to break up with my Korean girlfriend yet, so I am staying"

Actually, what will people do when they go back to their home country? Will an American find a better job? Where? Wouldn't it be better to see if this Obama prophet guy heals all wounds? If it ends up McCain, oh boy, not gonna go there. I'll stay here.

I'll hide in a cave, like those samurai warriors, if McCain gets in.

1) I was planning to take an early retirement in March anyway. This is only a few months early. With the global economy crashing I can't think of any good reason to stay working.

2) I have 15 acres of beach in the Philippines. Time to go and watch the coconuts grow. When my daughter gets old enough for middle/jr. high school we will head back home to complete her education.

3) Probably not and I don't have any need to do so. I only have about 10 million at risk and it can wait until the rates go back up in a year or so. I am far more worried about my US-401k and my Canadian RRSPs than my money here.

4) NO. I can't think of any good reason to return to the problems that expats here face for the "privilege of working here".

After going through ALL the hoops, EXCEPT marrying a Korean, to obtain an F5 (residence visa) I was informed by immigration that it will NEVER happen because a "teacher" is not considered to have made a positive contribution to society so is not allowed to become a resident.

With no future other than as a migrant worker I can't think of any reason to stay or return. It is a personal decision.

As a parting shot, I seriously hope you consider writing an article (translated in Korean, perhaps) for local rags, outlining just why desirable teachers aren't interested in staying here.

As someone else stated, Korea gets what it deserves.

This is pretty much proof. We've had our differences, but your F5 experience really ... sucks!

I'd be interested in doing a skype interview with you (you're far away from Seoul, eh?) on this topic.

I see that there is a lot of emotion around savings accounts and the whole sacrifice thing with relocation...BUT....I can say with confidence that things are not any better at home (if you live in the USA). I am coming over in November and simply put, the jobs are being cut at an alarming rate here. I was located in one of the fastest growing areas of America (Austin) and the market dried up. I relocated to the city that is home to the Wal-Mart HQ in Bentonville, AR only to see major job cuts throughout the area here as well. I am relocating to Korea for the experience but also with an understanding that the currency valuation is cyclical and the Koreans dedication to learning English will not go away. Granted, it may be that they fill many of the lower paying positions with folks from countries like the Philippines but that is likely a temporary fix. As more jobs are lost at home, people will migrate to work and from my basic understanding of the culture, it sounds like they would prefer caucasian teachers to be quite frank.

If anyone's noticed, a big part of Korea's exports go to the US and China. And it's not common household goods--it's 'luxury' electronics, steel and whatnot (and I know I'm forgetting a few obvious ones). Since most Americans, and I assume Chinese as well (esp. considering their market crashed like 80% over the past year?? or something ridiculous like that), can't afford that new flatscreen from Samsung or an LG Gucci/Prada/Dolce whatever phone, the economy is going to be STAGNANT..until they find new markets. They were/are trying to do this but it's slow goings after the biggest global crash since the Great Depression (just because people aren't saying depression, doesn't mean it's not happening or gonna happen). Plus, I don't think people are going to be using that nice steel of theirs to be building much anytime soon....

BUT being in Korea is still a much better place for an ESLer than the US...and the food is better. kimbap chungook kicks mcdonalds ass when it comes to something decent, cheap and fast to eat....not to mention galbi and sumgyupsal...oh don't get me started on that goodness. i need to get back there for some boiling chigae on a cold winter day...

I don't send any money out of the country, so the exchange rate doesn't really matter to me. A thousand won still buys me what it did before the global financial crisis, so I'm fine.

the kick in the balls is that i got a job offer in japan at the same time as i got one in korea. i said to myself... the cost of living in japan would be insane and i'll make more in korea.

too bad you don't have the "if i could, i would, but i enjoy where i'm working at so, i'm struggling on paycheck to paycheck sending as much home as possible... stayin put"
