...mass exodus/status quo/mass influx

Mass exodus: people wake up and realize that ESL is a house of cards unless you work for a college or public school

Status quo: people use the non-retarded exchange rate to send things hom and wait it out.

Mass influx: because things are just a shitty back home

New people don't really have an idea what the Won rates were in the past.

Hell, most people on here didn't realize the Won was this bad 3-4 years ago.

I don't see how working for a public school or college could help you when the Won drops like this.

Unless the OP thinks that college profs or public school slaves get paid in dollars.

4-5 months vacation is a huge perk, even if the won sucks. Plus you can often work for the uni during vacation, or work in another country, if you want to add to your income.

yes, but the previous poster had also mentioned public schools - and your idea does not apply to some public schools

my public school contract alllows only two weeks vacation

so the money for these ps positions is not worth it

because public schools are way more inflation proof than hagwons.

Don't even think about long vacations in Thailand / Philippines. Incredibly expensive airplane tickets that are always more expensive when we get vacation time and the feeble wons performance against these countries' currencies means we have to stay in Korea longer. Mad

What's the point of all that vacation time, if you can't actually afford to take long vacations in a country with nice beaches??? Crying or Very sad

Trips will be fantastic when the flight prices start tanking. We can get the uber cheap flights out of Seoul paying in Korean won, and then pay for the actual vacation in the dollars and yen we've had stashed for years.

So the 5 months of paid vacation are still looking pretty damn good from where I stand. We got some amazing deals back in late 97-99, and the airport was a ghost town.

I'm not sure what I'll do for my vacation this winter...I'm leaning towards working a bit, and getting some dental work. I was thinking Phillipines or China or Thailand but the exchange rates are of course pretty unfavourable. Getting some teeth fixed might be the best whomp for my won, so to speak.

Better still, "the most 'chomp' for your won".

I have a rental property in Thailand and my tenant pays the rent directly into my bank acct so I never have to worry about exchange rates when I go to Thailand. Spending money for free plus the property value has increased almost two fold now since buying in 2000.
