AP INVESTIGATION: Stevens got $2.7M for pal's road

By GARANCE BURKE and ADAM GOLDMAN
The Associated Press

GIRDWOOD, Alaska (AP) Just 0.7 miles long, Crow Creek Road isn't a road to nowhere. It runs straight to the Double Musky Inn, a Cajun bistro owned by a Bob Persons, a close friend of Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens.

It cost taxpayers $2.7 million to widen and pave that road, and Alaska had higher priorities. But an Associated Press examination of government e-mails and interviews with state transportation officials found that Stevens moved the project to the front of the line.

Persons, owner of the popular watering hole where the Republican senator frequently dines, testified as a defense witness this month in Washington, D.C., where Stevens is on trial for corruption.

"This is a classic pork barrel project that just confirms everyone's fears," said David Williams, a vice president for policy at Citizens Against Government Waste. "It's like 'Hey, if you're my buddy, I'll just get you a few million dollars and make you a road to your restaurant.'"

Details of the Crow Creek deal emerged as Stevens awaits a verdict in his trial. He is charged with lying on Senate financial disclosure forms about gifts, including more than $250,000 in home improvements to his cabin, not far from the Double Musky.

Trial testimony indicated that Stevens granted Persons power of attorney to guide the home renovation. Among the many presents Stevens is charged with concealing is a nearly $2,700 massage chair from Persons. Stevens says the chair was a loan. But his explanation of why he kept it in his house for seven years led to one of the more awkward exchanges of his testimony....

I've heard about the project the article talks about. The question is whether or not there is going to be a mistrial or not. One of the jurors had some kind of family emergency and had to leave. They were talking about either replacing the juror or declaring a mistrial.

Before that there was another problem with another juror. That one was causing some kind of 'stress' problem and the jurors met with the judge about it.

I heard about that as well. People have told me that juror duty is stressful. Personally I've never been called for it.

Yesterday the judge said the deliberations had to start over again since one juror was replaced.

I'd guess by the end of the week, one of two things will happen. Either a hung jury or an acquittal.

Dole's 'godless' ad riles Hagan
Lisa Zagaroli, The Charlotte Observer
Comment on this story
U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole, clinging to her seat, aired a new political advertisement Wednesday suggesting her challenger is "godless," prompting threats of legal action by state Sen. Kay Hagan.

Dole, a Republican, is trying with the ad to shore up the traditional GOP constituency of evangelical Christians, a group that could be crucial to her re-election. The hard-fought, multimillion-dollar battle between Dole and Hagan could determine whether Democrats have a veto-proof majority in the U.S. Senate.

Hagan, a Democrat who teaches Sunday school and is an elder at her Presbyterian church in Greensboro, said she was furious about the television ad. The spot ends with an image of Hagan and the voice of a woman -- not her -- saying "there is no God."

"Elizabeth Dole is attacking my strong Christian faith," Hagan said in a conference call with reporters, adding that Dole should be "ashamed" of herself....

What's wrong with these Republicans?

Let's see, if they tried actually campaigning on the issues, and once elected did what they promised to do, maybe they wouldn't need to run such moronic commercials?

And if the public didn't like the job they did, they wouldn't get re-elected. That's democracy.

Do your best. If the voters don't like it, leave with your dignity. And history may judge you kindly. That's what happened to Harry Truman, who so many Republicans like to unjustifiably compare themselves to. He didn't run for a second full term, his poll numbers down. But he always had his self-respect, and the love of Bess.
