So race, class, and gender discrimination are baddy baddy when applied to a black male, but no problem when applied to a conservative, white, woman?

No. My point is that "hanging" imagery, when applied to a white person(of either gender), likely isn't intended to be racist.

If someone were to say "Let me tell you what I'd like to do to Sarah Palin if I got her alone in a dark alley", it could be justifiably interpreted as a reference to rape, and hence extremely sexist, and hence out of bounds. Whereas if you said the same thing about a male politician, it would likely just be viewed as a reference to common assault, and hence not as offensive. (Though not really a good thing to say, all the same.)

I don't think this is radical, cutting-edge, identity politics stuff here, Gopher. It seems like basic common sense to me.

No one claimed that this reflected racist intent. Rather, this reflects extremism, On the Other Hand. Similar to chanting "kill him" re: Obama.

The fact that Obama's supporters and Palin's opponents want to cite lynching and racism to interpret, mitigate, justify, or merely draw attention away from this story and its meaning says something. I think their defensiveness and not the mock hanging is the real story here, too.

In any case, I will not play spin jiujitsu games with you over this. Someone in Hollywood took the time to create and then hang a S. Palin effigy in their front yard -- clearly intending that others should view it. I do not claim that this represents anything other than the views of those who performed the act. How do you respond to what they have done, On the Other Hand?

OP: check out this.

Three of their headlines, as of right now:

Obama: McCain admits he is like Bush
Palin's off-script comments irk McCain aides
Palin dubbed a 'diva' by McCain advisor

The two Palin headlines were in fact generated by the McCain campaign itself when aides within the campaign began talking out of school--they obviously wanted the public to know (for their own political reasons). Quarrelling inside the headquarters camp is news--part of the story about why McCain is behind in the polls. It was not necessary for the Republican National Committee to release the information about the $150,000, but they deliberately chose to embarrass their own VP candidate just before the election. That is legitimate news.

One of the up-coming debates we'll very likely be having is about the Fairness Doctrine. It should be a bang-up discussion.

Elections are regularly scheduled coup d'etats where the factions of society compete for power, but without the firing squads. The media is not a disinterested faction in the competition.

Jim Cavanaugh, special agent in charge of ATF's Nashville field office, said the two men planned to shoot 88 black people and decapitate another 14. The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist community.

That's really sick and bizarre. Does anyone know the meaning of 88 and 14?

Circling back to the 14/88 stuff, Wikipedia and Urban Dictionary seem to agree that 14/88 has significance to white supremacists in the following ways:

"14" representing 14 words written by David Lane (founding member of the white nationalist group "The Order"), "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children."

That slogan was apparently inspired by a statement, 88 words in length, quoted from Volume 1, Chapter 8 of Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf:

hat we must fight for is to safeguard the existence and reproduction of our race and our people, the sustenance of our children and the purity of our blood, the freedom and independence of the fatherland, so that our people may mature for the fulfillment of the mission allotted it by the creator of the universe. Every thought and every idea, every doctrine and all knowledge, must serve this purpose. And everything must be examined from this point of view and used or rejected according to its utility.
It can be combined with 88, as in 14/88 or 1488. The 8s stand for the eighth letter of the alphabet (H), with HH standing for Heil Hitler. 88 can also stand for the book 88 Precepts by David Lane.

Ah ha!

Thanks.

Counting the number of words, especially in a translation, seems uncomfortably close to connecting the dots for me.

You expected 100% sanity?

C'mon. Imagine, for a second, it was an Obama doll. HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!

Hmm, that's a good point. They put this story and picture up on FOX News, a few days before Halloween, stirring the pot for their viewers...

Well, Joe Boxer, it looks like you'll probably get your wish! (You just probably won't see it on FOX News)
