Lets finish up our immediate plans and do something else.

Me: 9 months, MBA finished, two years korean "experience," 18 won in the bank.

2.5 is not per capita wage in any western country.

"Per capita GDP" includes infants and housewives. Oh, and the Go-jee.

so, on average, your local toothlessmthrfkr makes more than u do.

bring it, kids.

All the people can take a look at their alternatives.

GDP per capita also hides the amount of hours the average person is working. As an American you assume GDP depends on 40 hour weeks, while it is clear that GDP in Korea depends on 60-70 hour week. Ergo Sum, your income is also determined by the amount of hours you work.

How many people on a BA can earn 10-15$ an hour?
You take the current weakness of the Won relative to the dollar, and decide that for you it is no longer enough. So be it. But this weakness is temporal and once the markets stabilizes again, then it is time to really think what to do.

Going back is not an option for a lot of people because the chance is low you will actually find a job anyway.

Try to think a bit more about what you are saying.

I do not understand all of your arguments. You ask how many people can earn 10. - 15. dollars an hour with a B.A. The answer is a lot. My best friend was earning 9.75 with no B.A. The weakness of the won is a factor for many people and, yes, I agree it will go up, but it may take years and some people have bills due now.

I only need to do my student teaching back home to finish my Master's Degree with a Teacher's Certificate in Special Education, and can then get a job easily.

For me, the won plays a role in my wanting to go back; what is stronger is the lack of respect we get here. Many Koreans and some of us Western people act like we can't get jobs back home. I know I can get one that pays more with more time off and certainly more respect.

I have enjoyed the time I have spent here and will probably go home soon; maybe someday I will come back.

Should I stay or hit the road?

Hmmm. Let's see...

1475 won = $ 1.00

If I have had my head stuck in the sand and have accumulated a lot of money in the bank here, I'll lose when I convert. Not good.

1477 won = $ 1.00

If I am forced to stay here because of the potential loss, my employer may think I MUST stay here and may start exploiting me.

1478.5 won = $ 1.00

If I stay and the bottom falls out, I may get laid off. If I get laid off, I won't be alone. I'll be joining a pack of other holders of pink slips, and we all will be scrambling for jobs at the same time. If I walk away NOW, I may be ahead of the distribution curve and will be settled into a new contract when the job-searcher wave hits.

1481 won = $ 1.00

Decisions, decisions...

I'm stuck here. If I leave now I will have to pay back the airfare reimbursement, flight back home, no pension, no bonus, etc.

I really don't have any bills back home except I owe $400 on a credit card. Right now I'm just making minimum payments with money I have in a checking account back home, and the interest is low enough where I'm not getting hit too hard. I do owe my mom a grand, but it's not like I have to pay her right away, although I would like to. She would rather wait for the money than see me lose money by paying her with won.

Lastly, if the won doesn't recover after my year is up (Sep. 1, 2009), I can always just leave the money in CDs here or invest in some Korean stocks and wait until the the exchange rate is better to convert. What do you guys think? I have no family to support back home, and I can at least get a job as a substitute teacher making $100 a day if I can't get a real teaching job...

Median annual income for BA/BS degree is 43k/year.

That's $20.67 per hour. So yes, I would say that $10-$15 per hour for a BA degree is more than acceptable.

I guess I could go back home and apply for unemployment along with every other professional dude or dudette who's suffereing from massive layoffs. How much does a person pull on welfare nowadays?

Almost as much as the average salary for an ESL teacher in South Korea these days.

Perhaps some people can't get jobs back home that pay what they are making here (some even after the won drop), but that is definitely not true for everyone. It is actually quite annoying when Koreans (and even some western folks) make that assumption. There are some of us who can do quite well back home. I am here because I like Korea, I like teaching and I like the vacation, but I can also earn 2-3 times my salary here back home if I choose to go (and that's even in this economy, you just have to be qualified in the right fields). I don't really want to leave Korea, but a mortgage and student loans in US dollars mean that I can't last too long with the current exchange rate.

The Western world is a giant loonie-bin/hospice with increasing numbers of people cast on the scrap heap, burdened with crushing debt, taken to the cleaners in some scam or other and thrown in jail or onto the streets. As if that weren't bad enough it is populated almost entirely with fat, hateful, feminazi bitches and their sickly male lickspittles. Even if I were paid in just lodgings, food and clothing, I would still be better off here.
