Hi,
I would appreciate some feedback from public school teachers in Uijeongbu please.
I'm being told I "have to" work on Saturday 15th November for an English Festival.
I wouldn't mind except the pay/hours are lousy. Start 11.30; finish 7pm. Pay is 100k.
I just spoke to Dain Bae at GEPIK - she has no knowledge of it.

I found out about this yesterday. I'm not sure how I feel about it really, I was told I would be paid for it of course but not sure how much at this point. I would also be interested to hear from others and was thinking of starting a thread at least to see who was going etc. |

Ummm.... You are public school. Doesn't your contract state no Saturdays? Unless they are paying you a good hourly rate (and you have it in writing with the principals chok), don't give up your Saturday. |

Yes. It states no Saturdays. My liaison/helper showed me the contract saying I have to do it but she misinterpreted it or the Gyeonggi board of education did.
Anyway, I'm prepared to work for a decent pay rate but I told her, as it stands, it's unacceptable. |

Even if the contract says no Saturdays, I'm sure there is another clause saying you must work overtime upon request.
However, if you aren't planning on doing this, there is nothing they can do except fire you. I'd suggest stronger negotiation and I'm sure you can get 240,000 for the 8 hours. |

Ignore it.
If asked before or after simply say "my contract says no saturdays."
A good teacher has nothing to fear.
No argument, no emotion. simple straightforward fact. |

We can suggest to you that you simply say no and find something to do that day to make yourself unavailable. But you are the one who must stand up to them. No Saturday work means just that- NO SATURDAY WORK. If you agree to work it, then you just might lose all of your Saturdays. They will see you as a doormat. |

Been there, done that...
It's a city / district thing and NOT a GEPIK / provincial thing and your co-teacher volunteered you for it (without asking first).
You have a couple options:
a) Say NO. It is a clear violation of your contract. Be firm but not confrontational. You CAN stand on your contract. They can't MAKE you do it. Your co-teacher will look bad for it but hey, them's the knocks.
b) say yes and accept the pay (they usually toss in a dinner as well if you are interested).
c) say yes but INSIST on an other day off - banked time (added to your holidays can be nice).
d) say yes, accept the pay, but insist that you WILL be asking for a similar return favor in the future.
Pick one.

Yes, it's coming from the city office, so get your ounce of blood in some other way. They can't give you more cash but they do have other things they can wiggle on (like longer vacation time - squeeze 2 days if you can since this event is 8 hard hours - like 2 days of classes). |

u can always ask for the standard overtime rate at least. you should be at least make 160,000, not 100k. |

This happened at my school. But I said I had plans on Saturday. After a lot of too and fro-ing, they changed me to the Friday and I got basically a day off school with over time. Just stand your ground, they will respect you more. |

I'm still interested to hear from other teachers in Uijeongbu who have been asked to do this festival.
My co-teacher said all the other native teachers have accepted the situation regarding payment and she threatened any little favors I receive will cease if I refuse to work on the Saturday. I think that was totally inappropriate and it might become a little issue for me because if I feel I'm being bullied I will, on principle, stand up to it.
I don't understand why this division (GPKI I think, not GEPIK) expect me to work for them for less money than I normally earn on a weekday... |

You can also remind her that all those little favors she asks for will also be refused.
Stand your ground and stand on your contract. They want something AND they want a discount. It's up to you if you want to go and if you are willing to accept their terms. She volunteered you and SHE is the one who will look like an ass if you say no.
You are playing chicken and he who blinks - loses. Stand on principle, stand on your contract or negotiate something else (but they won't kick in more cash).
It's up to you and the ball is in your court.
