I'm teaching a three hour long Middle School games/activities class to a group of twenty-or-so upper level students on Saturday. I've been doing this for a month or so now, but I'm running out of ideas of what to do with them and last weekend, the teachers told me they wanted to mail all my information to them early so we can plan more efficiently (the school has no internet or printer that I can use, so stuff needs to be prepared in advance).

Does anyone have any ideas for a three hour long, advanced Middle School class? The kids are great... I've been having fun with them these past few weeks. But I hate going into a situation with a shitty plan.

Three hours? Jeez. That's a long old lesson.

Umm...I'd be inclined to do something drama based if they're the top students etc. Maybe show them a couple of movie clips that they can relate to (Grease or something if it's a mixed class or girls only.)

Hour 1 ~ Get them to watch the scene/s, then get them to listen to each line as you pause it and then get them to repeat back what the characters just said. As they do this, get them to transcribe the dialogue into a script.

Hour 2 ~ Go over the vocabulary and see if you can illicit meanings etc. Maybe do some character/background/setting development etc if they haven't had time to watch the whole movie. Maybe begin rehearsing in last 20 or so.

Hour 3 ~ Rehersals and presentation etc. Circulate and help students with any particular pronunciation problems. Depending on how long each pair/group has, at the end, get them to perform their scene. 5-minutes each would probaby be about as much as they could really prepare for. Get the students who are watching to give each group a mark out ten. Prizes etc for winning team/group/pair.

Just noticed that you said you don't have internet. If you've no computer and moniter etc, then maybe you could google for a movie transcript and use that instead. Might actually get them using their imaginations a bit more if they've never seen the movie anyway.

Why are you doing this? I thought you taught High School? In the future, you might want to avoid saying "Yes" to these kinds of "requests."

My suggestion is the give them a 10-minute break every hour. Then you're down to 2.5 hours. Take 5-10 minutes to chat / take attendance/etc after the break= 2 hours. Stretch every activity out five minutes longer than you normally would=1.5 hours. Now you only need to plan for two 45 minute lessons...so take two lessons from your HS class and insert them here.

btw, what is a "games / activities" class? That would send me running for the hills right there! I don't care who you are, three hours of anything, be it games, studying, or what-have-you is much too long for MS kids.

I need the money. Student loans beckon.

That, and my Canadian friends also teach at the same school. That's how the school knew who I was. It's not something I mind doing, it's just difficult to plan for.

It's on my Visa too... If it weren't for that I wouldn't do it.
