thailand is beautiful, but it is no paradise. the people are poor, exploited and if they act friendly it's because they depend on your tourist dollars to survive. the resort areas are an illusion for westerners and not the real thailand. if you take a train out of bangkok to the south, you'll notice a whole city of shanty towns, people living in little huts with scrap metal roofs. and the deformed beggars along the sukimmvit are enough to make a grown man cry.

In Thailand, people that are poor and live in huts with a scrap metal roof know their situation and are still happy individuals and try to find the lighter side of everything...in Korea, successful individuals such as CEO's of large corporations that drive ferarri's and live in mansions commit suicide.

From this we can conclude that more people want cheap sex than want to watch soccer. Thailand is known as a hotspot for international sex tourists. Plus Thailand is MUCH cheaper for regular international tourists to visit.

So are you trying to say that the Thai people who live in these huts and are poor, would NOT change places with these Korean CEO's if they could?

Give it a rest. There is nothing noble or dignifying about living in poverty. It may sound romantic, however if you tried it for a week, I bet you would say "How can people live like this?" Your perspective from three square meals a day and a decent paycheck, is vastly different from people who maybe eat one meal a day (if they are lucky) and living in a slum.

You can get a 12 hour over night ferry boat straight from Bankok to Koh Tao, avoid all the tourist spots and get straight out to that little untouched dive island paradice. It's the greatest spot on earth, and I'll be back many times ...

I just meant everything to be taken lightly, just trying to draw comparisons...I still believe, however, that Thai people are much happier than Koreans on all fronts. Also, to say it's all about money/it's not about money...well, you'd be asking the opinion of a third party that wasn't included, us. I wonder how many of us westerners would be in Korea if it wasn't for the financial oppourtunies? I don't know, maybe I'm still on a Thailand high...and whoever said Thailand is a double-edge sword cause when you come back to Korea it just sucks that much worse...man, you couldn't have been anymore correct...God, these Koreans seem so evil, I just have no patience all of a sudden...like today when I bought mondu on the street and I wanted an extra packet of soy sauce that costs maybe 2 won (I'd even pay for it) the lady I bought it from starts screaming at me like a crazy biatch. All I could say was, "Oh I'm sorry, I forgot you're Korean."

In Thailand, the police were involved in 1300 extrajudicial killings during a "war on drugs." (and that's the official number)

In Thailand, they have one of the 5 largest gaps between rich and poor in the world.

In Thailand, a massage parlor baron became a folk hero for speaking out on massive police corruption.

I'm not an expert on Thailand, but I spent a lot of time around people who were, and ...

In Thailand, you're going to find a lot of the same crap you find in Korea, with a slightly different face.

Doubt it is the greatest spot on earth. Also if you keep going to the same spot, how will you find an even better spot?

Maldives is pretty cool.

I have been to thailand, too hot, too humid, too tropical for me on a full time basis. Good for a vacation.

The woman didn't seem "all that" but then again I went with my wife, not for poon hunting.

To the OP you should mention GOLF, GOLF and more golf and not extortion like Korea...also BEAUTIFUL courses too!!!

Thailand? It is so overrated. Did it once, can think of about 20 places I will go see first before going to Thailand. Ergo, will never go to Thailand again.

Pros:

-Nice beaches, but seen better.
-Its cheap.

Cons:

-The cities are cesspools. BKK is one big mess that offers very little for people NOT on a sex holiday. The temples get old very quickly.
-The people? "Hey friend, Ill make you a deal" "Where you going?"(this one is repeated about a 1000 times a day, 99% of the time by someone looking to rip you off, like a taxi driver) "Wanna see some beautiful girls?"(Um,Im with my wife you idiot, piss off). Thailand is the land of fake smiles. The people doing the smiling are mostly the ones looking to rip you off. The Tuk Tuk drivers who dont take you where you wanna go, but instead take you to some jewelry shop where they try to con you or pressure you into buying what is probably fake crap.

Thailand? Spent 2 weeks there. Stayed in 4 star hotels which cost me 40 bucks a night. That was great. The problem was when you left the hotel. It was a miracle if you were left alone and no one tried to sell you something.

Screw Thailand. Malaysia is a million times better.

If I had to choose Thailand or Korea, I would choose Korea as the place to live and work. Thailand is a cesspool and I wouldnt pick it over KOrea even if they paid me the same money.

Simple:

Total area of each country to squeeze tourists into (taken from the CIA World Factbook)
Thailand: 511,770 sq km
South Korea: 98,480 sq km

If you consider a non-World Cup year (2001)

Thailand total tourists: 10,060,000
Korea total tourists: 5,147,204

So there were 2 times the number of tourists to a country 5 times the size...

Well hey, Real Reality - you're not the only person who can post pointless statistics that don't really mean or prove anything. Rolling Eyes

actually, I agree with you...the beaches in Thailand are overrated, nothing really like what you see in a postcard...and being hassled every other minute to buy a shrimp or get a tattoo or buy a hammock takes the relaxation of a paradise setting completely away...on the other hand, I'd take Thailand over Malaysia quite simply because it's full of muslim extremists...I wouldn't feel safe under a palm tree.
