I think one of you was named Beaver or something like that. I remember about a year or maybe 18 months ago there was a thread about how much money you guys have been making investing in mining stocks and some canadian companies. There was also talk about moving the money into gold. Just wondering if you guys have any good stories/advice for us?! I got out of Apple when it was at 190, but I can't even look at the investments that I didn't cash out. My retirement account has actually lost money compared to where it was 3 years ago. Thank goodness I'm living on the government right now. |

Well, I'd never suggest gold in a million years, not do I invest in Canadian stocks... The last time I made money off of mining stocks was 1993 -- I don't play that game anymore.
My advice?
For the stocks in your portfolio look at the value of the companies (not the market cap). If the stock price is down but the company has no or little debt and still has decent earnings, then you might have found a good deal and should consider buying more (if your stocks are all in sub-prime lenders, you might have a problem...).
As for me, I'm still marginally ahead of my initial capital, but I'm living on beans on rice in order to send as much money to the States as possible (sure, the exchange rate sucks, but when companies are priced so cheaply, I'll take the hit on the exchange). It's like Christmas and I'm hoping that the stock market continues to suck for awhile, because I'm packing away the deals (yes, I'm a contrarian investor).
Ask again next year how I make out. |

I still think the won will regain most of it's value. I also think the KOSPI will climb out of the crapper. I'm contemplating investing in a KOSPI index fund....well, ANY index fund for that matter. |

I've fantasy invested $10,000 in Amazon.com at $56 a share. My fantasy investment is at $8,941.28 right now.
Alright. Pick one stock you think is undervalued, invested $10,000 in fantasy money in it, and tell me what share price you bought it at (and ticker symbol), how many shares you bought (10,000/share price and lose the decimal). Let's see who has made the most (or lost the least) by Jan 1, 2009.
So me:
Amazon.com AMZN $56 a share. 178 shares. |

I'm a long term style guy and only buy stocks that I want to keep for four or five years...
But I'll put 10,000 on AIG.
10,000 * 2.11
$21,100 |

Luckily I'm still young, I can wait 30+ years. A lot of the stocks, and blue chip, are at 10-15+ year lows. Sure, prices might/will go lower. But, I think if you can wait a long time, 2 or 3+ years, you'll double your investment in a few years . Based on past trends. |
