I'm currently based in Korea and would like to visit China and Japan during my stay. (A separate trip to each country - not both countries during the same trip!) Not being very good at organizing my own itineraries, I want to do a guided/package tour.

I've looked at some of the English-language web sites of the Korean travel agents discussed in the sticky thread (e.g. Xanadu) and I see they do offer package tours of China. For some reason, none of them seem to be advertising guided tours of Japan.

Are these Korean package tours of China worthwhile? And can anyone recommend a good way of booking a guided tour of Japan from Korea?

Never EVER go on a Korean group tour.

I agree with Gamecock, but the Kaesong tour is different. I, too have been on the Kaesong tour (because there's no other way!).

As for China- I went in August and here's what I recommend. Don't go with a tour, its a waste of money. Fly into Beijing and get a hostel near Tiananmen Square. Everything you could possibly want to see is walking distance or a short subway ride away. I found the city very easy to navigate.

I didn't go beyond Beijing thanks to time restrictions, but many hostels can arrange onward tickets for you. Just book the flight and the hostel room, and get going . . .

I second what Politica has to say about travel to China. I also did a trip in July/August to Beijing and Xi'an. It was WAY cheaper to do it on my own. Beijing is very easy to navigate (good subway to most sights, as well as cheap taxis to everywhere else). Definitely get a hostel near to Tiananmen square. You'll have easy access to public transport.
