. . . without once mentioning all the DEBT! $10 trillion public and about the same private!
Still number #1

Its share of the global economy last year was about 21 percent, compared with about 23 percent in 1990, 22 percent in 1980 and 24 percent in 1960. Although the United States is suffering through a financial crisis, so is every other major economy. If the past is any guide, the adaptable American economy will be the first to come out of recession and may actually find its position in the global economy enhanced. |
I actually have sympathy for his dispute with Zakaria, who advanced some awful indicia to evidence American decline. But this shit is weaksauce. I'll sum his argument up: America cannot fall because it didn't in the past.
I think America will be just fine. But this kind of stuff still pisses me off, and I don't know why.
Oh, right, its another fat, complacent baby boomer who cheered while they saddled our generation (Gen X/Millenial) with their debt. |

I think I know what you mean. What irritates me about it is the amount of faith it requires. I'm all for being optimistic, thinking positively and having some faith, but I still look both ways before I cross the street.
**clearing throat sound** to the comment about Boomers. |

I tend to agree, America is still the most powerful nation. However, we are going through some growing pains and won't suffer a huge decline like other nations did when they became powerful.
The timing of your post is interesting because I just received a copy of Fareed Zakaria's book that Kagan mentions.
He links a excerpt of the book here:
