For the past two months, a major American magazine and an allied news service have been engaged in a legal battle with the United States Navy over records that they believe show that John McCain once was involved in an automobile accident that injured or, perhaps, killed another individual.

Vanity Fair magazine and the National Security News Service claim to have knowledge "developed from first-hand sources" of a car crash that involved then-Lt. McCain at the main gate of a Virginia naval base in 1964, according to legal filings. The incident has been largely, if not entirely, kept from the public. And in documents suing the Navy to release pertinent information, lawyers for the NS News Service allege that a cover-up may be at play.

Since it was an accident 44 years ago, I doubt it would have any relevance or effect at this point if it were true. Besides, wouldn't a death have been reported in civilian media off-base?

Meh, Bush's wife killed someone with her car too. Only dems are vulnerable to vehicular manslaughter.

Desperate, last-minute campaign nonsense.

That is as dumb as Republicans trying to make a connection between Obama and Ayers.

They say that prevented him from ever becoming the nominee.

Given the formerly unbelievable news stories about politicians' misdeeds, I would have to say anything's possible. And the allegation is consistent with McCain's other behavior.

If true, it would suggest that powerful people within the Republican Party are probably blackmailing him.

However, the stuff on the web is not from solid news organizations, and no responsible news organization would print such allegations so close to the election, even if they had proof.

If there was any basis for the allegations, they should have been raised long ago. This is not the first time McCain has run for President. So, on that basis, they are probably without foundation.

On top of that, McCain was such a screw up in his younger days that you don't need any more evidence of his irresponsibility. How come Republicans can get away with alcoholism, drug abuse, whoring around with strippers, etc., but let a Democrat be in the same room with a joint or a radical, and they are evil demons unsuited to higher office?
