Tell this to my soju-soaked upstairs neighbours at 0330 on a weekday morning and the ajoshies screaming at imaginary 'friends' while they piss/puke in the middle of the street under my bedroom window.
'Western' people don't have a monopoly idiocy. |

as for choosing to live over here - am not sure why some of you think as you do - I was attracted to the large apts and low rents - I have a 2 bdrm, less than 500,000 a month, 1 mill key money. it's nice.

It's cheap because it's noisy and looks ghetto. You really think you can have your cake and eat it too? |

???? obviously you DON'T live here -
it's usually very quiet- we don't even get that many bongo trucks - and I'm not even sure by what you mean "looks ghetto" ??
huh??
have you ever even been to a "ghetto" ??? which is usually white-speak for a place where there are people of color -
does that bother you?? a little diversity?? then stay in your all-the-same nabe and don't come here - what more can I say? |

Welcome to Seoul! |
what exactly is your point?
fyi, I've lived in several areas of Seoul so it's not like I didn't know the city at all - as others have pointed out - it's in a central area, convenient in many directions. Personally I don't like walking 50 feet out of my home into 6 lanes of major traffic. Any closer to the river and mosquitoes swarm you every time you walk.
and if you DID quit reading - why are you posting now? why not just go to another thread ? |
a) Because Seoul is just another big city, and people like to blame others, be they foreigners or natives, for the problems there, but that's just smoke. It's another big city. Maybe next contract you'll consider Suwon or Ansan, just outside. Good for day tripping, but smaller and more quiet for those that don't think staying up all night drunk and puking is considered a "24 Hour Culture"...Seoul is far from "a central area" as you say. If you like being in a central area, try Daejeon. There's a KTX stop there and you can be anywhere in the country fast.
b) Because I want to make it a point to noobs that Korea IS NOT SEOUL any more than Toronto is the capital of Canada. Only the people who live there think that. |
uh, it was OTHER people who were making the noise so it wasn't me - so who else do you think should be blamed??
you see, I come from the point of view that people who actually DO cause the problems should take responsibility for it. people like me work to make urban life livable as it should be.
as for being central - no, you didn't read properly - I and the others who mentioned this - we were referring to central to Seoul, not Korea in general.
Having lived outside of Seoul (Jeonju) and traveled all over K, I would never live anywhere else (in K).
as for moving just because of a few bad apples - hmmm - isn't that what spineless kiss-ass people do when they can't stand up to something they disagree with?
perhaps - I'd rather deal with it and try and make the world a better place. it starts at home, in our nabes, one person at a time.
respect.
I know, I know, something a lot of you don't have and don't give. New concept. Try and get used to it. Maybe some day you will understand. |

I empathize with the OP, having lived before in a neighborhood with a large congregation of foreign teachers when some weekends they'd get rowdy and give the locals a bad impression, that said the local residents were worse in this regard (and usually on weeknights). However, last night was Halloween and living in an area known for having rowdy parties I think you were expecting too much thinking that last night would have been a quiet night. Not that it makes it right what the party-goers were doing, but isn't complaining about this on Halloween night similar to complaining about the racket the church next door is making on Christmas Day.
Go hardcore on them the very next time they have a big party instead. |

I lived in Japan for 7 years and read/was told constantly that J folk 'party' outside the house due to living in small spaces/lack of insulation and/or privacy from neighbours.... generally true...BUT they still had the mindset of:
-why close a door when you can slam it?
-why speak in a regular (or even quiet) voice when you can shout?
I find the same thing here.
I also had the bad luck to live underneath a drunk who would come home in the early hours and then start the washing machine off. Being a twin tub it only ran for about 10 minutes on wash, clothes had to be switched to the spin area etc. Usual scenario was: start it. Fall down drunk. Washer would make thudding noise with each rotation of the poss stick in the centre. Silence. Repeat every 20 minutes or so as he woke up from his drunken stupor. Not fun when you have an early start every day.
Later I lived next door to a J-lass who seemed to work from home in the 'entertaining' business.
The first was a company provided, low rent box. No result from polite requests to employer to have a word.
Latter was through a foreigner friendly company and complaining did work. |

I am so close to calling the police and/or filing a formal complaint - if that is even possible - and I so do not wish to do this. No one knows more than I how difficult it is for foreigners here and this would not help at all. |
Yeeah...sorry, must have misread that in your OP. My apologies.. |

For some reason I can't quite put my finger on I find I just don't have a great deal of sympathy for Koreans suffering from others' noise pollution. |

bundangbear, restraint is needed here. Partially on your part, but most definitely on ours. It's tough to look at that video, listen to your reasoning, and not want to unleash a barage of negative comments. Sorry, buddy, but a camera and a web page do not a philosopher make. |
Yeah, I made the mistake of watching a minute of his Dokdo video. That's 60ish seconds I'll never get back.
And Bundangbear, stop with the self-advertising, it's pathetic. Yeah, brah, I know you have a Youtube channel, that's great. You and 800 million other people. "224+" subscribers in a country of over 50 million does not equate to "becoming known." |

I was harassed by a foreign English teacher while driving in my car on the way to work this morning. As I make Youtube vids, and I have 224+ subscribers, I am becoming known. So, some foreign teacher shouts at me, "fag," right from the street at my car! Jinjja!@@@ okokokok claimed it was him, and next time, he will yell, "fat ass," though I believe he's just joking; nonetheless, it's still negative vibes that don't belong here, n'est-ce pas? |
I don't think that many people really care about you. You are NOT famous and doubt many people could (or want to) pick you out of a line up

You live in a big city where 24/7 alcoholism is the norm, then get all huffy when people have a party on Halloween?
