first of all, which protein powder would you guys recommend off one of those sites, like mass119, etc?
actually I'm quite skeptical of supplements, since I think their actual benefits are minimal but I find them very useful as a psychological placebo. The one thing did try way back which rocked... was Xenadrine. then a couple of fat guys OD on the stuff and die.. and now it's banned.
anyways - after kind of slacking off in September, I've gotten back to my pre summer routine, but I've given myself a little more latitude with food, keeping a big bag of candy for the kids has been a killer, since I dip into that bag on a consistent basis when sitting by computer during free time.
I've put on about 2-3 kilos out of the nearly 10 that I had lost after coming here but my it's really only reflected on the slightly fuller feeling around my stomach. This I hate, but on the positive side, I look bigger/more muscular and feel a bit stronger.
So I'm trying to figure out a way to keep as lean as possible while still getting bigger/more muscular. I know diet is a key and though my will/discipline can be pretty good, it can never be PERFECT, I always play little games, like (well you can pig out on this now, since you'll be careful with this and this later).
I guess I'm now rambling, I'm asking about the obvious, but just curious to hear any tips and suggestions on this...
oh yeah.. and I've decided to start doing abs.. I HATE doing abs.
Any suggestions/ideas on the FASTEST/least taxing and least annoying way to approach it? (there's considerable debate in the lifting community on the best way to approach ab work) |

i'm a girl, so i don't know if my advice would be totally different from a guy's but...
why do you need protein powder? the only guys i've known to use it are ones who really want to bulk up and/or have a serious skinny problem and need the extra calories.
anyway, why protein powder instead of just natural low fat protein like egg whites, tofu, beans, and chicken?
also, doing circuit ab sets on an exercise ball really gets my abs...also, doing those first is a great warm up and also gets the abs activated before lifting weights or cardio
i tend to do a long set with about 3-5 different ab exercises that are non stop and never stop engaging the abs (bridges with pulling the ball in and out under me, bridges with leg raises, etc) then repeat the full long set 3-5 times. then, i'll do sitting ball abs with weights or leg raises...anyway, a circuit set gets different ab muscles and is a lot less boring than 500 sit ups and leg raises
also, if you do abs right on a ball, you can get your back and legs at the same time |

You have no idea what protein powder is for. Another clueless person.
Your confusing Protein powder with weight gainer.
Tofu for men is an equivalent of snorting Asbestos. Soy has been linked with elevated estrogen levels in males. Estrogen + male = Prostate cancer RISK.
Again your clueless when it comes to diet. Fat is good, fat is needed to maintain and build muscle. You need to eat right fats tho.
When it comes to plant protein make sure you eat a mix. Plants don't contain whole proteins, that's including beans. |

jeez no need to be a bitch...that's why i asked what the protein was for...
also, i know you need good fats, but if he needed extra protein it doesnt need to be fattening extra protein unless he wants to gain weight and/or do more cardio. calories count!
what not everyone has read Diet for a Small Planet or something similar?
yes, i am clueless about protein powder i guess so please tell me why is protein powder so much better than natural protein? |

Hi tacon, it is a little different for guys vs girls but I appreciate the feedback. The medicine ball thingie sounds interesting and certainly more so than the traditional stuff, but we don't have one at my gym.
re your question about protein powder. It's a well established fact that protein is your muscle "building block" and people that want to add muscle must ingest more of it than your average eater as well as lifting weights.
you can google up the term but the simplest way to explain my interest in it, is that it offers the best "bang" in serving in pure protein terms and I have always had difficulty with the advice of eating 5 or even 6 smaller meals during the day... I tend to eat 2-3 bigger ones.
Also, no one would claim that it should replace protein "gold standards" such as chicken or tuna or egg whites, but it's very useful as a supplement and I'm also interested in it for post workout purposes.
(recuperative)
this a good link, though a bit "hardcore". I'm not sure how useful protein powders are for women btw.. since they're limited by their lack of testosterone production from getting very muscular in the first place.

ps. dinga - interesting link! an interesting exercise. Have never heard of it, but when I think about what's involved, it makes a lot of scientific sense!

I use it cause I probably don't get that much protein from what I eat. It's easier than cooking. (Meat here sucks, not really into soy, and a person gets sick of eggs.) It seems to be working though, last time I tried getting a weight routine going it was hard, even though I was cooking and eating pretty well. This time I get less muscle pain and it doesn't last for days any more. Maybe I'm just in better shape to start with, doubt it though. |

As others have said, powdered protein is a supplement to a good diet, not the main part. People who work out hard and are trying to stay lean and gain muscle should eat 1-1.5 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight. That's either an insane amount of cooking (can't trust restaurant food) or a reasonable amount plus a few protein shakes throughout the day. |

That's crazy. Every day?? Is it less for women? |

Can anyone else confirm this?
I JUST bought a large soy-based protein powder, (trying to get back into the gym again after a very long absense). |

Well, as a pro boxer, I have to work my abs extra hard (they have to withstand hard body blows).
Unlike other body parts, abs can be worked out every day, and should be. I personally like working out my abs. You don't, though, so I would hit them FIRST. The body part you dislike working out is the one you should hit first. You'll get other guys saying the opposite advice, but I'm just saying what's worked for me for many years.
For your abs:
1. Work them out every day.
2. DIET. Get rid of all carbs, except before your workout.
3. Running. Jogging at a decent pace, with sprints thrown in.
Like I said, other guys will find fault with what I said. The above has worked for years.
PS As someone said, NO SOY! |

Btw, that includes white rice. Stop eating it at your hogwan. |

Nutritional Guidelines to Defining Muscle

While limiting fat intake is a good idea, totally eliminating it is not. Besides being necessary for healthy skin and hair, fat is involved in the production of many hormones, including testosterone. That's why it's almost impossible to build muscle mass when on an extremely low fat diet. Fat also lowers the glycemic index of many high carb foods, so we don't get that huge fat-producing insulin surge commonly associated with eating fat-free goodies by themselves. More importantly, we need a certain amount of fat to process body fat metabolism.
In other words, eating too little fat makes it harder for us to burn unwanted fat.
To stay toned and defined, I eat good fats in moderation...about 15-20 percent of my daily calorie intake. Good fats include essential fatty acids, like flaxseed oil and monounsaturated fats, all-natural peanut butter, olive oil and avocados. |
