I thought we could use a thread that might be productive and inspirational, so I'd like to ask the question, what are your goals that you want to achieve while here in Korea?
For example, a person might say:
Quote: |
I plan to be in Korea two years. I wish to...
Pay off my student loans
Save $10,000
Learn intermediate level Korean
Lose 25lbs |
What are your goals? I'd be happy to hear, as long as they're serious posts. |

My goals in Korea:
-run away from my marriage / having kids
-run away from a drug addiction
-make money for little work
-maintain a life on the fringe of society
-accept very few responsibilities
-enjoy my job with children who are not yet jaded
A little too honest maybe...but it's Sunday afternoon and I'm drinking beer and looking at fall foliage. An honest moment is alright. |

Hey! It's fall already. Switch to wine -- you'll be glad you did! |

Pay off properties in Thailand for investment/retirement.
Become self-employed.
Finance children's education (WITHOUT) them taking out loans.
Just enjoy....and "be." |

I once had a student who brought to class his collection of old 1 and 5 won coins. I wonder how hard it is to find those nowadays. |

- pay off student loans ($8000)
- save at least $20,000 CAD
- get into shape
- have fun
So far I've paid off my loan and had some fun. I lost the weight I wanted to, and now I'm exercising to look more toned. 40% complete on the savings. Ten months left. (Out of 18.)
After this, I don't know. |

Extremely. But not impossible, so I'm told. I'm told 1 won coins are actually still minted, though not in circulation. The other numismatist I talked to here said that the 5W coin is not minted anymore.
I finally finished going through the old FT's shipwon box and found the oldest at 1968 and the newest at 2008. Odd ones I'm missing:
2002 shipwon
1998 bekwon
The rest I just haven't found yet. I had flips brought in and I'll put them in later. Optimistically, I need 50x4 - 1960-2009 in four coins. 50W are hard to get because shopkeepers all round it down to the nearest bekwon. |

My goals, in the order they pop into my head:
- complete an MA degree in linguistics (Feb. '09 start)
- get a departmental university job
- finish paying my loans (have made significant progress)
- speak intermediate Korean
- speak beginner Arabic
- deadlift five plates
- squat three plates
- get better at pullups and dips (no specific goals)
- get rid of my last few inches of stubborn belly fat
- travel more (spending January in Thailand)
- make significant headway into retirement savings
- do all this in the next 3 years or so, then:
- go to another country to teach and consider a PhD
Good thread idea! |
