To the Americans/political junkies: Do the first polls close at 8am (Korea time) on Wednesday? Given that there are no major irregularities like 2000, what time will the results start rolling in? (Presumably I'll be teaching at the time, but I'd like to keep an eye on the numbers.)

I'm thinking lawyers are going to play a big hand in delaying the results, so we might know who the next president is by Wednesday evening or possibly even Thursday (if not later).

Maybe I'm just remembering wrong, but usually, assuming there's nothing contentious, it's usually official-ish by late that night. I'd assume we'll know by 1 or 2pm on Weds (our time).

If the polls close at 8PM EST, then we should tune in at 10AM here, right?

The US has more than one time zone. I do not think the polls close at 5pm in California.

We already know it's going to be Obama, but...

if he wins VA, Penn., FLA, which're all on the east coast, we could know early that he won the whole thing.

if he does poorly there or it's close, we might have to wait for Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Indiana, which would delay it a little bit.

Either way if we don't know by beer o'clock (5PM) something's gone horribly wrong.

When I checked CNN's website at 8:15 this morning, it was one day 23 hours and 45 minutes until the first polls close. That makes it 8am Wednesday morning (I think). I'm going by what they said.

The thing I'm not sure about though is when the results are going to start rolling in. In Canada we use a pencil and a piece of paper to vote, and the eastern provinces are not allowed to announce results for fear of affecting voting in the west - they can count the ballots before the polling stations in the west even close! (I don't know about in the States though - it seems like the system is WAY slower, more complicated and litigious there.)

Riots I can deal with. Small price.
