Hello everyone,
I've been reading your posts lately and this is my first post. Your input is appreciated.
I was teaching at a public school in Jeollabukdo last year. This time I'll be teaching in Jeollanamdo (public school too - I'm not with EPIK, but with Jeolla Off. of Ed.)
I'm curious why Jeolla doesn't offer provincial allowance? I asked my recruiter about this and he said they just don't. I remember in Jeollabukdo I had provincial, rural and multi-school allowances on top of my basic pay. And this year, my rural allowance is built into my basic pay already. It seems like I'm not making more than last year at all. Is it because Jeolla offers more vacation days? And to all the Jeolla teachers out there, if you do get overtime, what rate do you get and how many hours? (I was getting 30,000 W/hr, 6 hrs/week) I'm asking because it's not stated in my contract this time.

Your recruiter is lying. I work on and island in the province, and everyone here gets not only rural pay, but isolation pay as well. I get a travel allowance and multi-school allowance as well, but for some reason the other two multi-schoolers don't, I believe. |

Here's what my recruiter (Canadian Connections) offers:
2.2 mil W (including rural allowance) I am at level 2. I'm Ok with no multi-school allowance since my position is at an English Town, I guess no travelling required. But no provincial allowance?
Also, on my contract, clause 22 (indemnity deposit of 600,000 W), which I didn't see in my previous contract w/ Jeonbuk. Is that common now?
I just wanna be sure I'm getting a fair deal before I sign the contract tomorrow. BTW, if I agree, I'll be in Jindo. It seems nice. I like tranquility. And I've been trying to negotiate the contract with the recruiter but it's getting nowhere. Should I just run and look elsewhere?

There is no "provincial" allowance because not all of Jeollanamdo is rural. If you are in a small town (mine is around 30k people, but I used to live in a village of about 300 people), you just get the rural allowance. I believe that only islands or places waaaay out of the way get isolation pay
The indemnity deposit is standard for this province, sadly, and be careful - you will have to fight to get it back.
Oh! Jindo! That's where I work. The English Town here is super nice, and while Jindo is relatively isolated (we're an hour from any grocery store larger than a CVS), there are about 6 of us foreigners here, which is a nice community.
Now noticing that you're in Jindo, I can tell you that the English Town here is run through a different contract than the rest of us PS teachers, so yes, your new contract corresponds with what the previous teacher had.
Also, your apartment is SWANK. It's brand new, and is a 2.5 bedroom.

Ok....if what you say is true, then I should be getting isolation allowance as well, being in Jindo? Hmm...
I was under the impression that transportation allowance and multi-school allowance are the same? Hmm... I'm not getting them anyway.
BTW, is there a Kyobo bookstore in nearby cities like Mokpo?
Not sure if this relevant, I'm Asian-Canadian (born in Asia, not Korea though, raised in Canada) I just have the urge to be in Asia for the next few years of my life. Not sure if it's a mid-life crisis or whatever they call it. I ventured to Korea last year and loved everything about it, therefore would like to come back. |

Not a lot of time to reply right now, so I'll keep it quick:
Things probably have changed, but when I came to Jeollanam-do in 2006 they were only giving rural pay to four counties: Shinan, Wando, Jindo, and Goheung, because those four places are comprised entirely or mostly of islands. Strange, because Wando was a lot bigger than my old town, and I taught in a village with a population of about a hundred, but I didn't get rural pay. Maybe that's what they're talking about there.
Indemnity seems standard for public schools and hagwon. Make sure you take note of the condition of things when you get there: a broken light, a crooked door, a leaky faucet, etc., so you don' get stuck paying for it.
There are unfortunatley no big book stores in the area. You can find a smattering of English books at a couple of bookstores in Gwangju and the other cities, but really next to nothing at all. There are book clubs and book swaps organized in Mokpo and Suncheon, and probably other cities, too. BUt what most people seem to do is order from whatthebook.com They'll deliver books anywhere in the country, and it's quite convenient.

You don't get isolation allowance because you're under a different than standard contract. You're not getting those other allowances because your apartment is about 200 yards from your school.
There isn't a Kyobo in Mokpo, but there's a large bookstore (can't remember the name) in the bus terminal in Gwangju, about 2.5 hours away.
Be aware that Jindo is quite rural. Many people don't have indoor plumbing (including one of the schools I used to work at), and the student level is very, very low, as most of them are farmer's kids. That said, I really like it here - the people are nice, and it's very pretty. Hope you like dogs, though, as the island is famous for being the origin of Jindo dogs, and there are at least 30 within a block of my apartment.

Correction, you will get isolation pay. At least, the teacher you are replacing did.
By the way, your co-workers are awesome, and their English level is very high. |
