Not sure what you mean-- Western employers certainly care. |
Do a survey of most companies in North America, you'll find only about 25% of the employees are 4-year degree holders. I'm not saying they don't care at all, it makes it easier getting a job, but once you have a job people don't really care. |

Probably what happened was ING intentionally hired all these unqualified people to let the good times roll, who are friends or relatives of executives or the big sales managers, and now that they need to contract the company, they are firing them on account of not having degrees as a way of sacking them so they don't get benefits. Someone high up in the company set it up for the police to bust them as the cheapest way to shed some excess fat. There's probably a cost benefit to the company to fire long term employees going to jail instead of laying them off.
This is the breaking up for a good ol' boy club in the world of business and finance. It's typical in business careers for unqualified people to be hired and those qualified don't get a job. |

Not to say this doesn't happen in the West, but when was the last time you heard about someone getting caught with a fake degree? Honestly, I can't remember EVER seeing anything like this in my first 22 years of life.
I also think all these forged diplomas are funny, considering Korea boasts about its high percentage of college graduates and its focus on "education." |
I only heard of this type of thing happening once back home....it was a female instructor for some technical/engineering college.
I seem to recall that the person was in fact......Korean. *_*
I can't remember the details, it was quite a few years back. |

For me, it shows how much dishonesty exists in the work environment in Korea and in the private sector. Of course, corruption is so wide-spread in Korea. You have government officials betraying the government and telling hagwons when inspectors are coming, you have so many high profile people with fake degrees, you have police not doing their jobs in so many cases. It's really a big mess. President Lee has his hands full if he actually wants to clean up the country. I am glad these people were busted. Someone was doing a good job and caught these people, and that's a positive thing. It's good we have heard about this, fellows. It's good when people are found out. |

I agree. The sad thing is: They seem to think this somehow vindicates themselves, when in reality it allows them to think they've solved the problem because people in Korea might buy their story again, but everywhere else they keep looking more and more corrupt and ridiculous. Yet a few months later, they'll go on a complaining binge about how the rest of the world doesn't take them seriously, and then they'll start asking people to figure out how to be taken seriously again. And then another scandal will happen that they'll try to blame on the "foreigners" who are obviously the "problem". |

Ever check out some of the Korean language papers? They are pretty self critical. It's just when it comes to foreign language press, Koreans tend not to air their dirty laundry and blame the foreigner. They always want to project an ideal image of Korea in the English papers. |

And Koreans are worried about foreigners with fake diplomas. Clean up Korea first (i.e. set the standard), then worry about "maintaining" a "standard," whatever that is here.

What, of ALL jobs? Janitors, ditch diggers, cafeteria workers included? Well duh. This thread is regarding white collar professional jobs--ING, remember?
For professional jobs, damn straight US companies care if you have a degree, and that it be real.
Still struggling to understand your point. |
