I don't go to Haddon all that often for several reasons but before yesterday I at least respected their choice of merchandise.
what I found was every package - maybe a half dozen - of monterey jack cheese for sale was dated back in Sept - not even Oct - !!!
it really pissed me off - it takes time to go out there - they also didn't have a few other things I was looking to find - and what I did find the prices were not just high but astronomical!!! way out of line - more so than usual. I mean, like, not 2, or even 3 x but how about 4 or 5??
finally I checked out their champagne - thinking hey - Obama is elected, it might be fun to open some bubbly.
how about 95,000 won for a bottle!! you sh**tting me or what??!!
they really blow - I'm not going back again - for any reason. |

I find that if you're going to haddon for anything other than weird cheeses or meats, you might as well just go to costco. Same shit. |

| I made one trip there and was very disappointed. I found a few cans of Campbell's tomato soup. It was expensive, but I was happy. Everything else was a massive waste of money, and I got the impression they got everything from Costco, which is something I can do myself at a massive discount. |

Slightly int he same vein....
Was at the International market yesterday evening and didn't have much cash so I asked if I could use my card. The owner said yeah, not a problem. Anyhow, as I'm paying he says "You should bring card next time, this is a discount store, I give good deals!"....hahaha. Good deals indeed. A block of cheddar that sells for 11,000 won at Costco for 16,000. I'm not complaining about the price, just the presumption that I'm too stupid to realise his mark-up. |

| I've found many expired foreign products at Korean markets before. I guess Koreans don't know about them and assume that the product will be good forever. That's why I usually buy foreign foods at CostCo. |

Just cut the mold off. You can eat out of date cheese, but not bread or milk.
Why is it that Costco is the only supplier of western foods in Korea other than what is sneaked off US Army bases?
You'd think a store like Haddon and many others could contact a distributor who arranges to have stuff shipped to Korea and around the world. That's what import/export agents and any supplier willing to ship overseas does.
Is there that much of a trade barrier saying I can't import American, English, and Australian products into Korea for retail sale? Since Costco does it, I'd think others can to. You might not be able to set up a store in Korea, but you could offer a supply chain to Korean stores. You guys all would love me for allowing you real supermarket goods in exchange for your hard earned won.
Wait...wait...wait
Korea is lifting import duties on Cambodian goods starting this month which means out of date American and western goods will funnel into Korea since more of a selection of these goods are available in Cambodia. |

| I'm really no expert of cheese, but I've seen a few food items in Korea that are dated by when they are made, not when they expire. |

| I went to the suprmarket behind Gecko's in Itaewon not too long ago, picked up a block of cream cheese, turned it over, and saw a big, fat, nasty dead horse fly stuck to the back of it. Needless to say, I put it back and passed on buying cream cheese that day. |

Yeah, well there were probably more dead bug parts IN the cream cheese than on the outside of it.
Don't even get me started on Ketchup.
You've probably ingested a few hundred chopped bugs by this point in your life.

You know, some Jimi Hendrix or Led Zeppelin should chase away those blues. I suggest checkin' out You Tube's offerings on these two artists.
Start with Jimi's "Machine Gun" (go for the one at the the one at the top-of-the-list) and then check out Led Zeppelin's "How Many More Times?" (go for the studio version from 1969: It is the absolute nuts!)

I bought some cheese in that area before, and it was French sheep cheese, and it wasn't expired or anything. I checked the date. Perhaps, the American stuff is expired. I haven't bought the expensive Greek stuff. I would think the stuff from Europe doesn't come from Costco, and they have some European stuff. I wish Itaewon sold feta that isn't from cow's milk or sheep cheese of some sort. I understand Korea only started consuming cheese some years ago. Hey, we're lucky to have cheese at Costco or to have Costco. This isn't France or America.
I would like more foreign stuff, because that's what I like. |
