I can only speak from personal experience. When my son died in an unsolved case far from home, the day before Mother's day (may 10, 2008) I was distraught and powerless to force the police to investigate.

I wrote letters to all three candidates at the time, Obama, Hillary & McCain. the letter to Hillary was returned unopened, Obama never bothered to respond at all. McCain wrote back. McCain gets my support! His simple letter was more than any other politik has done to put pressure on the South Korean government to find out what happened to my son.

Well, he must not 'support the troops' then.

Any other low-rent propraganda concepts for us to recycle before Wednesday?

For some reason, I have a hard time believing McCain stopped everything to write a letter and then begain to put pressure on the North Korean government.

He supports the troops.

Well, he'll send them into kill and die in random shithole states for bullshit reasons. But he wrote a letter.

First off Tiger Beer, it's South Korea not North Korea

and No McCain most likely didn't write the letter himself. Someone on his staff did... and that's one person who gave a damn enough to respond, which is more than the zeros on Hillary's & Obama's staff did.

Besides, it's not the president who has the biggest impact behind the scenes, it's the people he has workin for him.. and at least McCain picks better staffers.

North Korea? The (presumably) murdered boy was the 14-year-old son of an English teacher in South Korea.

Does no one remember that horribly tragic story which was on this board just a few months ago?

I suppose if I were Stephanie, I'd vote for McCain, too.

If there is a reason to vote for McCain, I'm thinking that these letters are pretty much his only chance. It seems rare to hear support for McCain based on his platform.
Reasons to vote for McCain that I've heard?

1) Obama will tax the US to death
2) Obama is/hangs out with a terrorist/socialist
3) Main Street

Basically, he isn't Obama and Obama will do scary things.

Reading the letter over, I don't see any mention of what McCain did to help "put pressure on the South Korean government". Just that MightyMike's mom regards the mere writing of the letter as being a form of pressure. The letter itself reads like a stump speech.

And I'd be interested in knowing exactly what sort of pressure McCain would have been able to muster against the South Korean government on this partlcular issue. All due respect to the dead and the grieving, but this was not exactly an issue of high-level importance.

I'm sure the letter was sincere and was comforting to Stephanie. But a helpful action would have been for McCain to contact the State Dept. and find out what the hell happened in that sauna. Then reported back to her the actions he, as a US Senator, can do to help her find the truth. He didn't do that, did he?

Will he even bother after tomorrow? Win, lose, or draw?

So why are the GOP going to lose to a landslide after 8 years in power?

McCain's staffers aren't that good then are they?

Maybe the mom is just trying to raise awareness about her son's case (or lack of one) and is using the election hoopla as an angle.

Frankly, who can blame her for trying what she may under the circumstances of being in an environment where she is limited in politically (culturally) correct options as a foreigner in ultrasensitive ethnocentric Korea.

this is a total crock - and I'm not even convinced it came from Mike's mother.

first of all, any and all letters sent to Congress - and Hillary Clinton IS a senator - would be opened, acknowledged and responded to. It's a rule, protocol, whatever you want to call it.

Same for Obama - he IS also a senator, correct? and McCain - McCain I have my doubts would have bothered to respond simply because he ignores so many veterans and their problems - there's way too many of them voting against him!!

so pack up your last minute let's-see-how-much-more-garbage-we-can-spread nonsense and stuff it back into your bag of dirty tricks. I'm sure there's a voter somewhere that needs to be challenged Evil or Very Mad

oh, btw, it really takes an incredibly filthy despot of an individual to try and capitalize off the name of a young boy who died such a terrible and needless death here in Korea. congratulations. I'm sure there's a special place for people like you when you die. I hope Mike is waiting for you.
