Rachel Maddow has an interesting piece here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/#27508339

where she is criticizing the long lines of 3, 4, 5, 6 hours to vote and equates them to a poll tax. I don't know that I'd go so far as to call them a poll tax, but the lines would discourage many people from voting. She mentions that in Ohio more than 100,000 gave up in 2004. What would happen in northern states if there were a snow storm on Election Day? Or just very cold weather. Neither are impossible in early November.

There should be some mechanism to force states to open more polling places to alleviate these long lines.

There's gotta be a better way (although it seems some like it just the way it is).

Yes, I think it's 3 weeks in about half the states now. Someone said that about 1/3 will have voted early (that's about 40 million people based on 120 million voting last time).

Like caniff said, there's gotta be a better way. States with large cities need to fix this. It shouldn't take more than an hour to vote.

The Canadian election, my poll took me about 15 minutes, and that included registering to vote.

Unless the people are willing to pay higher taxes so that there can be more polling places, it won't happen. Whats worse, higher taxes or missing 5-6 hours of work? Too bad most people are too short sighted to appreciate the choice. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
