|
|
A few questions for those of you who have been there, done that.
1) My contract is up in April. I am very much interested in renewing, but haven't mentioned too much to my handler/coteacher yet. (I've hinted at it, and she's excited) When should I bring up a serious discussion of this? I was thinking in December? She goes away for training for a month in January . . .
2) My contract currently stipulates 14 days of paid vacation, but I heard that those of you who signed in September got 20 days. Will I get 20 days if I renew?
3) I hear there is a two week "break" at your renewal time for you to go home, get visa issues sorted out. Chicago is technically my "home base" . . . but I have no real reason or desire to go home. If the flight costs less, can I go somewhere else? Say . . . Australia?
Thanks in advance for the help!

You will not have to be concerned about bringing it up. Your contract stipulates that the school must confirm whether you will or will not be renewed two months before contract expiry. |

Bring it up about 60 days before your renewal date. They may very well leave it to the last minute if they think you will stay. It has happened many times (contrary to the contract).
You can insist on the 20 days in the new contract (download one from the GEPIK website).
If they hesitate over the extended holiday, make sure your co-teacher sees you actively looking for a new job. They WILL change their mind.
You can file the renewal documents with immigration up to 60 days prior to your ARC expiry and extend for 1 full year from the expiry date.

Yeah, you should have no problems getting the 20 days of vacation. I renewed this summer with my school and I signed the 14 day vacation contract (I signed in July for a September renewal). When I read that the new contracts stated 20 days instead of 14 for people starting after September 1st, I asked my co-teacher and they bumped me up to 20 even though I signed the 14 in my contract.
As for a flight home, I didn't take mine because the timing didn't work out very well and so I'm going to use it in the winter vacation instead. My school told me that I can:
1) Get them to pay for my flight back to my home in Toronto.
2) Not go home and get the money it would have cost.
3) Fly somewhere else cheaper than a flight to Toronto and get that amount.
I suspect I'll just get them to pay me the amount. They seem to be planning to use the Korean Air rates, which from my understanding are higher than most other airlines. |

Your contract (if it's a GEPIK contract) says that you should be told if the school is going to renew two months before te end of your contract.
Your contract also covers how many extra days you get off. You should mention the version of the contract (i.e. 2008, 2009) to get specific help.
As to where you can go to renew, you will have to work that out with your school. Technically, the contract says back to your home. |
