I think that the vote should take place on a Saturday. People are less inclined to take time off work to vote. I am sure it decrease the turn out. If you go to vote after work, then the polls would become super congested. They also need more uniformity between the various states when it comes to elections. I don't see why one state should be so different from another when it concerns a federal matter.
Election Day is a legal holiday in some states, including Delaware, Hawaii, Kentucky, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and West Virginia. Some other states have laws that allow workers to take time off from employment without reprisal, and often without loss in pay. California law simply states employees must be allowed to vote, but since voting can be done before or after working hours no time off or pay is offered by many employers. Democratic Representative John Conyers of Michigan recently introduced a bill in the House of Representatives that would make Election Day a national holiday called Democracy Day. |

OR if you're not an early riser, just go after work. There's more people (usually), but that's what I did last election and it was maybe a 30 min wait. Americans don't need a holiday for this. It wouldn't be wrong, it's just not necessary. Americans view holidays as days with little or no responsibilities. Most who wouldn't vote anyway aren't going to go to the trouble of disrupting their day off for it. Meanwhile, those of us who WANT to vote find a way to. Simple as making it a priority and doing it. |
