I am in the process of setting up penpals for the students I teach.

They are currently using Backpack 4 and are handling it pretty well. The contact I have for penpals teaches 7/8 year olds in Canada.

Are the language levels comparable?

I'm doing the same thing at the moment. They want kids their own age or older. And my teenage girls especially want to correespond with boys.

One advantage we have here in Korea is that no matter where we go in the world for pen-friends, they'll probably be at a much higher level than Korean kids their own age and can only help our students improve. Mind you, one seventeen-year-old American boy one of my HS students has been corresponding with has the writing skills of an eight-year-old.
