Examples, ranked in order of magnitude, include:
(1) FDR over (no one remembers without Googling!) 1936: 523:8; 46 states:2 states; and
(2) LBJ over B. Goldwater 1964: 486:52; 48 states:6 states.
Popular vote remained decisively far apart in each case as well. FDR won by ten million of votes; LBJ by almost fifteen million. I do not believe B. Obama will win such a clear mandate as either of them. |

Today the while the electoral college isn't going to be close the popular vote will be. |

| So then - not a landslide. Just a loss. Do you think the dems will have any class at all, or will they be as poor winners as they are sore losers? |

Democrats will probably be in a position to dictate American affairs through 2010, ReeseDog. Perhaps they will build a powerful base and continue; perhaps they will go about it antagonistically and provoke a backlash. They have provoked backlashes often enough: Brown in the South, R. Reagan and the Sunbelt, for example.

The country is STILL a very divided country.
I don't see how ANY leader would be be able to unite ALL people with the strong polarized political divisions that exist. |

There must be a magic combination of issues that will mitigate the polarity and bring about majority unity. Usually, it takes a war to do this. There must be other issues, however. That represents B. Obama's challenge now. |

As far as I can say, this is definitely a decisive victory, but not necessarily a land-slide, but a decisive victory it is, and it is not even a close election. Obama was projected to win, and he won decisively. The Democrats picked up more seats as well. The win in the popular vote wasn't huge, but significant enough. It was interesting to see that the Democrats had 44% of the vote in Texas versus the 38% or so Kerry received. I was hoping Obama would make more gains in the South, but he still made major gains and so did the Democrats.
I think the focus Obama should have would be on trying to get some moderates in government who have experience and reach out to some from the GOP who might be helpful. America needs help, not bickering. |
