Prostitutes Commit Suicide Over Police Crackdown
By Kang Shin-who
Staff Reporter
Two female prostitutes who lost their jobs following a crackdown in the red-light district of Jangan-dong in eastern Seoul took their own lives over the weekend, police said Sunday.
On Saturday evening, a 26 year-old female worker at a ``massage parlor in the area was found having hanged herself at her place of work in an apparent suicide. A day earlier, another woman, 36, an employee of a nearby brothel, hanged herself in her home.
Dongdaemun Police Station said the 26-year-old woman, only identified as Lee, left a suicide death note. Her brothel, operating as a massage parlor, had been closed at the height of the intensive crackdown.
In the note (written on a tissue box), she expressed frustration over the ``hasty crackdown.
When policemen were moving their bodies to a hospital, neighboring pimps and shop owners tried to block police officers, claiming they might try to conceal the suicide note. Police are investigating the cases.
Last August, a pimp identified by his surname, Choi, hanged himself in an underground parking lot, criticizing police for making his life difficult.
Pimps at massage parlors and shop owners are claiming that a series of suicides occurred following what they call precipitous crackdowns that forced them to fold their businesses and made it difficult for them to find new means of income.
Many of those involved in the sex industry in the region are scrambling to find new jobs and businesses for survival.
Police said they will continue to crack down on brothels regardless of the back-to-back suicides.

They should have gone to Bangkok and worked in a soapy massage parlour. There's a real demand for light skinned asian girls there. This demand is perpetated by Japanese and Thai men. They would have made a lot of money there. |

Just highlights the chauvinistic nature of the korean culture and halfarsed way the korean government tries to operate. You'd think targeting the middle-aged married adjoshies in a shame campaign (ie public display of photographs of the customers entering the brothels) would be a far greater deterrent.... if the government were really serious about the issue that is. The women are just supplying a service to meet the demand... why pick on them? In any case, is prostitution really so bad? If there is a need, does prostitution provide the outlet in a relatively 'safe' way? Is prostitution (the need/demand for prostitution) the cause of marital/relationship/cultural problems or one of the symptoms.
In any case, why is the governement involved? is it about improving Korea's 'reputation'? Trying to distance itself from the sex-tourism stigma of some other asian countries? Would the government be better concerned with improving education and welfare. |

The ajoshies are just paying money to keep the women in business. Why pick on them?

It depends. The idea underpinning most prostitution - that men should pay women for sex in one way or another - is very bad. Certain manifestations of that idea, such as marriage, are very bad. Within that context, the kind of prostitution they are cracking down on is not that bad though.
If they must eliminate it then why not attack the source of the problem with a campain to encourage ajumas to keep themselves attractive and give more sex to their husbands and a campaign to encourage Korean women generally to put out for free whenever a man asks them to? That should do the trick. |
