Yeah, I'm sure there's a bunch of threads about this. Oh well.
I recently bought a new DigiSLR off Ebay. I had it shipped to my parents in the states -- the seller was so close to my house so the shipping was free.
I'm going to have them send it to me here, but first I'd like to know if there's anything I should have them do to avoid any unnecessary costs or time in customs...ie should I have them open up the packaging and say that the camera is used? Should I have them say that it is a gift? Should I have them get rid of any receipts from the Ebay vendor and say that the camera was worth much less (I payed about $800) than it was? Anything else I should know? |

i recently purchased a $400 hand held gps device that i had sent directly to my residence here in korea. the retailer was kind enough to alter the receipt to show the total cost as $110 and even though i asked him to open the package to make it appear "used" he left it sealed. not only did it take a measly 4 days to get here, i wasn't charged a penny in customs.
that said, i think customs would be a little more knowledgeable about the actual cost of camera equipment. can't hurt to try, right?. :/
just be prepared if customs decides to charge you. |

| I read that having it sent as a "gift" can save you money at customs -- is there any grain of truth to that? |

| It wasn't a DSLR, but my parents sent me a new Canon a few months back, they insured it and put the package's value as $300USD and checked "gift." I didn't have to deal with customs duties or anything |
