If anyone wonders why Americans take pride in their country, listen well to President-Elect Barack Obama.

I agree wholeheartedly. He is an inspirational individual. Call me a cynic but I believe the president is limited in what he himself can do policy wise. Therefore I would argue that the true power of the president lies in his ability to inspire other to make changes that politician often cannot.

Americans had a choice between blurrga gurrga islamist, gurrgle blurrgle socialist, irrgle girrgle terrorist and the hope that Obama inspires. They made the right choice.

Nice victory speech. Was he wearing an American-flag lapel pin?

What I really liked about the speech was something I found he wasn't doing enough in the campaign - weaving a narrative for the audience, electorate.

This is key for a communicator and finally instead of just facts, explanations he is using a lot of metaphor and story to uplift.

I'm happy to see that politics once more has returned for a moment to its proper place. Politicians should/must be cheerleaders, communicators and motivators. In the last 30 years, most have become mere bookkeepers, accountants and paper/number shufflers....this should not be part of the job description.

He does know how to give a speech, doesn't he? It reads more like an inaugural than an acceptance speech. Good job!

Just like you to bring up the "patriotic" card nonsense. Much like a lot of your own thinking -- fully of cosmetics and no substance.

I'll take Obama's substance and worry naught about what he's wearing or if he pledges allegiance 5 times daily.

Ddeubel: B. Obama seemed firmly against the things not so long ago; now he is wearing one.

I take it as a good sign; a sign that, unlike you, he has chosen to honor and not to disdain those Americans who attach importance to such things as that. Does not surprise me that you would not get the gesture.

Believe me Gopher, I GET IT. I just choose to believe that substance is much more important than the color of one's skin or all that stuff.... YOU DON"T GET IT. Keep pulling at those fringes, you;d make a good religious zealot.

Fact of the matter is -- in a just and true America it shouldn't matter one iota whether he is wearing a pin or not. Deeds, intelligence, character - these are the things of which a man is made noble. Not your pathetic notion (very magical and nativistic - if you understand the anthropological and primitive origins of your belief) a pin.

First, the truth hurts doesn't it!

Second, because you are correct, I'll address your comment. Yes, I'm a douche bag here and proud of it. Never used to be like that but after many , many threads where I responded intelligently, with links, information (and despite my continued role as a troll, I do occassionally fall back into my usual sincere, polite, informing mode), after those attempts and getting only "leftist" or "brainwashed" comments -- I stopped!

To cut to the quick -- I'll be the very frivolous and cutting troll. Douche Bag if you want to call it so. That's my online persona. I'm sure if Gopher and I (or you) , share a beer, we would agree on much and it would be interesting.

However, when I'm online and nobody really ever discusses and only just retches either their simple diatribe or short, cursory primitive blurts -- I'll continue with the douche bag act. I can -- I know who I am and thus, I have no attachment to my act or how that validates me.... I also don't have to play anyone's fiddle or be anyone's dog. FREE. Ideologically and especially intellectually. The world as we know (McCluhan was right) has generally been rid of free thinkers.

Just a little about my own rationale.....If you'd been around here long enough, I'm sure you could have witnessed my evolution.

C'mon guys name calling isn't necessary.

Rarely do I agree with DD but I do enjoy his writing.

By far one of the most entertaining characters amongst us.

(He's also a great teacher)

When he and Gopher go head to head, well not much goes with a beer better than that.
